Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal on Qatar

The Netherlands seized the advantage in World Cup Group A as goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen sealed a 2-0 win over African champions Senegal on Monday.

The Lions of Teranga are missing their talisman, Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane, at this tournament and though they battled hard, could not find a way past the debutant Dutch goalkeeper Andries Noppert. The win puts the Oranje, three times World Cup finalists, in a strong position in the group, with matches against Ecuador and hosts Qatar to come.

A disappointing match at Al Thumama Stadium was played in front of plenty of empty seats, despite organisers’ claims that the country is gripped by World Cup fever. However, the attendance was given as 41,721 – more than the stadium is actually listed to hold.

The goal the Dutch craved finally arrived with six minutes of normal time to go, as Frenkie de Jong swung in a ball from the left and Gakpo beat Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to it to head home. It was no less than the PSV Eindhoven man deserved after an impressive performance. Substitute Pape Gueye almost responded instantly for Senegal, but again Noppert got down well to a low shot. Eight minutes of injury time were added, and the Dutch sealed victory in the final seconds when Mendy spilled a shot from Memphis Depay and fellow substitute Klaassen followed up to slot home the rebound.

USA 1-1 Wales

“Terry Medwin turned 90 a couple of months ago and has lived more than two-thirds of a long life with the distinction of being Wales’ last scorer in a World Cup 2022. Not any more. As the sound of ‘Viva Gareth Bale’ echoed around the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, a quintuple Champions League winner had added something he will prize more than many of his other achievements: a World Cup goal.

“It was a goal that meant plenty, too, and not merely emotionally. Until he dispatched a penalty past Matt Turner, the United States football were deservedly ahead, seemingly favourites, along with England, for a place in the last 16. Yet Wales can be characterised by dogged resistance and a refusal to give up.”

Wales defy the odds to write new history and salvage draw against USA

USA 1-1 Wales: Rob Page’s side barely landed a punch in the first half but the introduction of Kieffer Moore changed the game as Gareth Bale rescued a point

USA 1-1 Wales

“Two periods of 45 minutes, two very different Wales approaches.

“Ultimately, an overly defensive-minded and deep-sat showing in the first of those almost proved their undoing, with USA taking a lead in a potentially decisive Group B clash, before a sea-change in... well, everything, saw the game end up a 1-1 draw.”

Here’s Karl Matchett on tonight’s game:

USA 1-1 Wales: Timothy Weah scored the first-half opener but the Dragons were much-improved after the break and Gareth Bale’s penalty earned a point

Wales captain and goalscorer Bale: “We were fully focused on this game, not looking any further, as we’d said.

“Not a good first half to be honest, they played well and we played poor.

“Great talk from the gaffer at half-time, changed a few things around, we came out battling. Great point from where we were.

“No doubts in my head [about taking the penalty], I feel like I have to step up, and happy to do so. Incredible [to get a World Cup goal], but I’d rather the three points to be honest.”

Wales coach Rob Page: “To go a goal behind against a very good team in the USA [...] we showed character and determination to come back.

“Credit to the lads for the shift they put in to get us that point.”

On Moore replacing James: “That was nothing against Dan James at all, [the game] just suited Kieffer.”

On Bale’s penalty: “He’s never let us down, has he?”

USA 1-1 Wales

90+9 mins: A composed Davies’ clearance goes all the way to Moore, but USA keeper Turner rushes out of his box and heads it away.

The ball falls to Bale, with Turner miles from his goal, and the Welshman is hacked down before he can try a shot from distance. Just a yellow card for Acosta, though...

The resultant free kick is claimed by Turner, and that will be it!

Full-time: USA 1-1 Wales!

USA 1-1 Wales

90+7 mins: A cross from deep finds Moore in the USA box, and the striker chests it down well. He can’t maintain control of the ball, though, and USA get it clear.

Wales come back through Bale, who tries to set himself for a shot on the edge of the box, but he can’t sort his feet out and loses the ball.
