Germany begins their campaign to defend their World Cup title with a pretty tough starting match against Mexico in Moscow.

After dominating the group stages since 1994, the Germans have a lot to prove after suffering a bad year of results.

Mexico might see this as an opportunity to strike while the iron is hot but you can expect Germany, with Timo Werner, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos listed on the squad, to make a good run.

Odds

Prediction

Germany 2-1 Mexico.

But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.

39 mins: Germany almost reply immediately! A wonderful save from Ochoa tips a Toni Kroos free kick onto the crossbar. After a fashion Mexico clear the danger.

Mexico's Hector Moreno earns himself a yellow card for time wasting...it could be a difficult 45 or so minutes for Germany

43 mins: Germany, for all their attacking talents and experience, are making the same mistakes over and over again. Losing the ball in an attacking area leaving Mexico with acres of space on the counter is leaving them vulnerable

HALF TIME: Germany 0-1 Mexico

One of the young stars of the tournament Hirving Lozano has given Mexico an unlikely lead against Germany, who are far from their best

What can Germany do differently in the second half? Well for a start they'll need to plug some of the gaps that Mexico have found on the counter attack, particularly as Germany will need to continue to push forward to get back into the game.

Khedira has provided little in cover for his defence, and Kimmich, despite his undeniable talent has been slow in getting back after attacking.

SECOND HALF: Germany get us back underway for the second half

Molly Hudson17 June 2018 17:02

49 mins: Germany trying to start the half positively, but a tentative shot from Plattenhardt and a poor cross will do little to settle any German nerves

Molly Hudson17 June 2018 17:06

I think Mexico might have been a tad excited about that Lozano goal...

Molly Hudson17 June 2018 17:08

53 mins: Not sure Kimmich got the stay back memo. He has a shot from just outside the area, and spent most of that passage of play as a midfielder. Lozano and co must be licking their lips at the chance of another counter attack

Molly Hudson17 June 2018 17:10

57 mins: And there is the counter attack again! Plattenhardt leaves Boateng with two to mark, and the Mexicans should do better.

Germany are looking better going forward, but still very open at the back

Meanwhile, Vela comes off for Alvarez, a defender.

Molly Hudson17 June 2018 17:15

60 mins: Marco Reus is on for Sami Khedira, in what can be safely said was not his best showing in a Germany shirt. A real sign of attacking intent from the Germans
