From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Preparations for Egypt’s first World Cup finals match for 28 years have been overshadowed by the question of Mohamed Salah’s fitness.

The Liverpool superstar has been deemed fit to travel to Russia and yet it remains unclear how much of a factor his injured shoulder will allow him to be at the tournament.

Hector Cuper’s men have little margin for error at Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg. Uruguay are widely fancied as dark horses for World Cup 2018 and will be satisfied with nothing less than top spot in Group A.

Prediction

Egypt 0-2 Uruguay: Atletico Madrid pair Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez will keep Egypt at bay while Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani make the difference at the other end.

But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.

27 mins: Egyptian striker Marwan Mohsen gets another shot on target, but again it's a limp, tame effort. Struggling to see where a goal could come from for Egypt in open play, perhaps their aerial ability could be a danger?

28 mins: Egypt do try the aerial route, but Muslera collects and sets Uruguay off on the counter. Suarez, who has made a poor start, has a first touch he won't want to see again. Cavani has been the bright spark from either team so far

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 13:30

30 mins: It might be slightly harsh to say Suarez has been one of the worst players on the pitch so far, but he is miles away from his best. A yard off the pace, and visibly frustrated, he now has a chance from a free kick...

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 13:32

31 mins: Predictably the free kick can only find the Egyptian wall. Uruguay may be by far the favourites, but Egypt will be quietly confident after the opening half hour

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 13:33

33 mins: Mo Salah fiddles with his shin pads on the subs bench...the sight of that is greeted with probably the loudest cheer of the half so far

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 13:34

37 mins: Uruguay again attempt to get it out wide, but an aimless ball into the box is easily gathered by El Shenawy. Uruguay poor, but Egypt aren't much better.

Not the most vintage half of football so far, those of you in offices without a TV screen aren't missing a great deal at the moment.

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 13:39

40 mins: Amr Warda attempts an overhead kick falls on his back, and stays down. Uruguay kick the ball out of play and the midfielder miraculously recovers.

Molly Hudson15 June 2018 13:41

That midfield is looking less than impressive...and no real signs of improvement as half-time approaches

HALF TIME: Egypt 0-0 Uruguay

Fair to say the second half would struggle to be as sloppy as that. Uruguay have options on the bench, and Mo Salah lies in wait for Egypt, if they wish to risk his fitness against an underwhelming Uruguay

Some further analysis on the first half, anyone expecting five second half goals? No me neither. Russia will be watching this one with glee.
