Harry Kane had put England into the lead shortly after half-time from the penalty spot after the striker was fouled by defender Carlos Sanchez, with the captain brushing himself down to score his sixth goal of the tournament to remain top goalscorer.
But Colombia displayed their incredible resilience to score in the 93rd minute through a well-executed header through defender Yelly Mina, sending the game to extra-time with the scores locked at 1-1.
With no splitting the teams after 30 additional minutes, the game headed to penalties with England slipping behind when Jordan Henderson's effort was saved. However, Mateus Uribe rattled his effort off the crossbar before goalkeeper Jordan Pickford saved from Carlos Bacca, setting up Eric Dier to score the match-winning penalty and send England through to a quarter-final against Sweden. Here's how the action unfolded.

Colombia 1-1 England (England win on penalties). It’s pretty unlikely, because England don’t win shootouts, but Germany don’t go out at the group stage so who knows?
Let's get this out of the way nice and early. Knockout football means the possibility of penalties.
The Three Lions must be the only side still in Russia who have been answering detailed questions about their spot-kick preparations since March and the national obsession over the subject can only have intensified after two tense shootouts on Sunday.
The numbers are grim - England losing six of their seven tournament attempts - but Southgate played his own role in that sorry story in 1996 and has worked tirelessly to change the record.

The Chelsea goalkeeper drew attention to Pickford's height, suggesting his stature contributed to Adnan Januzaj's winner.
If there was ever a time to justify his selection ahead of Jack Butland, it is now.

Much of Colombia's pre-match analysis will have centred around how they can keep the prolific striker quiet - with his Tottenham team-mate Davinson Sanchez on hand as expert witness.
His likely partner in attack, Raheem Sterling, comes in looking comparatively toothless on paper.
By the time the game kicks off the last of his two England goals will be 999 days in the rear view mirror.
Southgate is confident the drought will break soon, convinced by Sterling's 23 goals for Manchester City last season and visibly improved positional play.

The Colombian Embassy has hit out The Sun after the British tabloid newspaper ran a front page that mocked the South American country for its historic drug-trafficking, ahead of Tuesday evening’s World Cup 2018 clash with England.
The Sun’s front page headline ahead of the last-16 encounter in Moscow read “Go Kane”, a pun based around the word cocaine, the substance that was at the root of Colombia’s illegal drug trade since the late 1970s that was dominated by various cartel gangs.
Along with the headline, the front page also read: “As 3 Lions face nation that gave world Shakira, great coffee and er, other stuff”.
The choice of words was widely condemned ahead of the match, which sees England attempting to win a first World Cup knockout game in 12 years, and the Ambassador of Colombia to the United Kingdom, Néstor Osorio-Londoño, hit out at the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper for its choice of words.
