From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Your support makes all the difference. All eyes will be on Lionel Messi as the 30-year-old Argentina star bids to lift the trophy for what looks likely to be his final World Cup tournament.
Group D kicks off with a clash against Iceland in Moscow, who are starting the tournament pretty confident after knocking England out of the Euro 2016.
Argentina should tread lightly though - Iceland could end up being the underdogs in the so-called 'Group of Death' as their track record has proven after drawing with Portugal at its European Championships debut two years ago.
With Iceland also reaching this stage for the first time in their history, they will be putting up a good fight to keep that momentum going.

Prediction
Argentina 4-2 Iceland. Both squads will be keen to get out of their groups, but it will certainly be entertaining to watch Iceland's star player Gylfi Sigurdsson give the Argentines a tough time.
But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.
63 min: MISS! (Argentina 1-1 Iceland)
WOW. Messi has missed. Halldorsson dived the right way and has stopped Barcelona maestro from scoring!
63 min: It must be said that in the build up, it was Messi's sumptuous ball into Meza that allowed for the penalty to be awarded but the strike was the perfect height for the Iceland stopper and the game is still level.
65 min: Messi hasn't let it affect him and has just won a free-kick in a dangerous position for Argentina.
It would be very Messi to score here.
66 min: But his effort is blazed over the bar and with 25 minutes to go, it's anyone's game.
70 min: Messi perhaps trying too hard to make amends?
He finds plenty of room running at the Iceland defence but decision making let him down and in the end it was left to Banega to curl a hopeful ball towards goal.
74 min: Argentina looking to pick their way through but no luck just yet...
It's not been the best half for Messi but we know what he's capable of.
Iceland, meanwhile, do seem pretty happy with a point.
Can they hold out?
76 min: CONTROVERSY! Pavon goes down under a touch but no penalty given.
78 min: Messi brings the ball down expertly in the box but can't get his shot away as Iceland are quick to deal with the danger.
