Hosts Wolves climbed out of the relegation zone with victory over Ruben Amorim’s struggling Manchester United
Wolves saw off a tepid Manchester United at Molineux on Boxing Day with a 2-0 victory that lifted them out of the relegation zone.
United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off as his side went down – a fourth defeat in their last five Premier League games.
Fernandes earned a second yellow card two minutes after the interval and United’s gloom deepened as Matheus Cunha scored direct from a corner.
It was an embarrassing moment for United keeper Andre Onana and one that summed up the malaise at the club as they languish in the bottom half of the table.
Wolves held on through a nervy eight added minutes against the 10 men and Hwang Hee-chan made absolutely sure with virtually the last kick after a counter-attack to make it a joyous first home game in charge for new manager Vitor Pereira who began his reign with an away win at Leicester City.
Victory lifted Wolves out of the bottom three into 17th place with 15 points from 18 games while Ruben Amorim’s United ended the day in 14th place with 22 points.

This game has been pretty even so far, without any really clear sights of goal.

19 min: At the other end, Cunha pulls off a brilliant dribble to evade a hoard of white shirts around him until the Wolves striker is eventually tripped by Fernandes. The United captain is booked, but Cunha can’t make anything of the free-kick.

16 min: Mainoo breaks forward through the middle and, after losing the ball, gets it back on the right side of the box. He takes a touch before whipping a lovely cross into the middle which just evades the forehead of Rasmus Hojlund. That was United’s best moment so far.

13 min: Vitor Pereira is gesticulating enthusiastically from the sideline, trying to get his new messages across. On the pitch, his players are starting to grow into the game. They work it down the right side but Cunha’s cross is dived upon by Onana, with Strand Larsen arriving.

11 min: Free-kick to United on the right wing. Bruno Fernandes curls in a deep cross but it’s too close to the goalkeeper, Sa, who punches clear.

8 min: Maguire tries a big switch to the far side where Dalot has scuttled up the left wing into space, but it’s slightly overhit and lands on Dalot’s chest over the touchline, for a Wolves throw.
