Arsenal travelled to Germany to take on Wolfsburg in the second leg of their Women’s Champions League quarter-final and the German side won 2-0 on the night to triumph 3-1 on aggregate.

Former Arsenal player Jill Roord poked home from close range to put Wolfsburg ahead in the first half at the Volkswagen Arena and that advantage was doubled when Leah Williamson turned Sveindis Jonsdottir’s cross past Manuela Zinsberger for an own goal with 17 minutes to go.

The Gunners hit the bar through Vivianne Miedema shortly after that but were largely outplayed by their hosts and exited the Women’s Champions League at the last-eight stage.

In a closely-fought first-leg contest Tabea Wassmuth had given the Frauen-Bundesliga side the lead at the Emirates Stadium before Lotte Wubben-Moy’s late equaliser earned Arsenal a draw to leave them on level terms with their hosts halfway through the tie.

The Volkswagen Arena which was also the venue of Arsenal’s WCL semi-final defeat in 2013. Wolfsburg won the second leg 2-1 at home to progress to the final that year and now, in 2022, they will face current WCL holders Barcelona in the semi-finals.

Follow the reaction from the Volkswagen Arena as Wolfsburg beat Arsenal:

Second half: Wolfsburg 1 - 0 Arsenal (2-1 agg)

Kick off: Caitlin Foord is brought on at half-time for Arsenal replacing Tobin Heath up top. The Gunners get the game restarted but Wolfsburg win the ball early.

It’s played down the right side to Svenja Huth who chips a cross into the middle and almost finds Tabea Wassmuth. There’s a deflection though and Manuella Zinsberger smothers the loose ball.

Arsenal are out early for the second half. They’re ready to go. Can they get themselves back into the game? There is no away goals rule so if Arsenal can finish the 90 minutes on level terms the match will go to extra-time and potentially penalties.

Arsenal only managed one shot in the first half compared to Wolfsburg’s 11 attempts. The Gunners just can’t get control of the ball in midfield, Wolfsburg are controlling that third of the pitch and it’s been difficult for Arsenal to play through them.

Jonas Eidevall has some thinking to do at half-time. Plan A hasn’t worked.

33 mins: Chance! Arsenal finally challenge Almuth Schult with an attacking move down the left wing. The ball is knocked inside to Steph Catley who shifts away from a tackle and hits one from just outside the box. The effort looks to be sneaking into the bottom left hand corner but Schult shuffles across and scoops it up.
