From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Follow live reaction after West Ham United beat Manchester United today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The Hammers picked up their third win of the campaign by beating United 2-1, with all the goals coming late on. Crysencio Summerville slid in the opener at the far post for the hosts, before Casemiro looked to have won a point for United when he headed in from close range at the other end. But Matthijs de Ligt was then adjudged to have fouled Danny Ings in the box in stoppage time and Jarrod Bowen buried the resulting penalty to give the Hammers victory late on.

BLOCKED!!! Garnacho swings a cross into the middle which Fabianski comes to punch clear, but he doesn't get enough on the ball and with his goalkeeper stranded, Kilman gets back in cover to block Amad's follow-up shot!!

Since the start of 2024 (excluding promoted/relegated sides), no team have kept fewer clean sheets than West Ham's mere two in the Premier League (level with Wolves). Indeed, their only league clean sheet at the London Stadium this year came in their very first one of 2024 (0-0 v Brighton on January 2nd).

Lopetegui rolls the dice again with the game still goalless, bringing on Danny Ings for Antonio in a bid to finally break the deadlock.

Casemiro has been Manchester United’s string-puller so far, and went the closest of any player to opening the scoring before his header was saved by Fabianski at full stretch. The Brazilian has had the most touches, attempted and accurate passes of anyone on the pitch, completing 14 in the final third and creating two chances in the process. He’s also won six of his seven duels, turning possession over five times in total via two tackles and three successful aerial duels. Lynchpin.

There’s the half-time whistle, and it’s somehow goalless at the break between West Ham and Manchester United! That’s not to suggest it’s been an end-to-end game so far, because it hasn’t with the visitors racking up 1.48 xG compared to just 0.04 from West Ham. Fabianski has been called into action on several occasions, seeing shots from Garnacho, Fernandes, Eriksen and Dalot in particular miss the target, while making saves from Hojlund and Casemiro’s efforts. The Hammers, meanwhile, have only produced an off-target Paqueta header to trouble Onana, and if Manchester United do break the deadlock, the floodgates could really open in east London.
