Too early to celebrate – Arne Slot keeps leaders Liverpool focused

Mohamed Salah made more Premier League history as Liverpool thrashed West Ham to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

As Liverpool ran riot against a sorry West Ham side at the London Stadium, Salah scored his 17th Premier League goal of the season and made his 12th and 13th assist by setting up Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

It was the eighth game this season where Salah had registered both a goal and an assist and marked a new seasonal record in the competition, after Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool with a clinical finish.

Mohammed Kudus hit the post for West Ham but Liverpool quickly moved out of sight as Gakpo and Salah struck before half time. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected shot made it four after the break before Jota made it five late on.

Arne Slot was able to protect Ryan Gravenberch and Gakpo from suspension ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, as Liverpool moved eight points clear of high-flying Nottingham Forest at the top.

Liverpool are also nine points ahead of Arsenal and 10 of Chelsea - having played the same number of games. Chelsea go to Ipswich tomorrow while Arsenal head to Brentford on New Year’s Day.

West Ham 0-4 Liverpool

58 mins: Changes: Gravenberch and Gakpo were a yellow card away from missing the match against Manchester United on Sunday - so with Liverpool 4-0 up, off they come.

Endo and Jota are on for the Reds.

GOAL! West Ham 0-4 Liverpool (ALEXANDER-ARNOLD 54’)

And now one for Alexander-Arnold! There’s a huge deflection and Liverpool are running riot now.

West Ham back off as Alexander-Arnold lines up the shot from 20 yards out. His strike whacks off Max Kilman’s head and beats Alphonse Areola.

Alexander-Arnold’s first of the season.

West Ham 0-3 Liverpool

50 mins: Salah’s eyes light up again as Gakpo brings it down and plays him through. Salah takes it early on his right foot and slices well wide.

West Ham have switched to five at the back but they are still so easy to play against.

West Ham 0-3 Liverpool

46 mins: CHANCE! Already an opportunity for Salah, as Mac Allister plays the through pass and Salah is released. He looked offside but Todibo was sleeping and playing him on. It almost looked as if Salah was expecting the flag to come but it didn’t, and his shot is easily saved.

KICK-OFF! West Ham 0-3 Liverpool

Back underway! West Ham make two changes with Coufal and Alvarez hooked and Todibo and Fullkrug brought on.

There could be more history for Salah in this season half. He is looking to become the first player to score multiple goals in four consecutive Premier League away appearances. He scored twice at Tottenham, twice at Newcastle and twice at Southampton, and is now one away from another record.

Does he mean it?

Salah’s assist for Gakpo’s goal, and Liverpool’s second, involved a stunning turn in the box and nutmeg on Mavropanos.

But did he mean it?

History for Mohamed Salah!

Salah is up to 17 Premier League goals and 12 Premeir League assists for the season.

Is Thierry Henry’s 20-20 season now in sight? Surely.

Good news for FPL managers, too.

History for Mohamed Salah!

With another goal and assist today, Salah becomes the first player in Premier League history to both score and assist in eight games in a season.

Bruno Fernandes, Harry Kane, Robin Van Persie, Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer previously held the record with seven in a season - Salah has broken it in just 18 games.

HALF TIME! West Ham 0-3 Liverpool

Liverpool lead at the break thanks to goals from their front three, Diaz, Gakpo and, of course, Mohamed Salah.

West Ham had actually come close to equalising when Kudus hit the post, but quickfire goals before half time means the Reds are heading eight points clear at the top.

There are boos from the West Ham fans at half time and plenty of empty seats - but the story here is once again Salah after another incredible half.

His stunning season continues.

West Ham 0-3 Liverpool

45+1 mins: Liverpool go hunting for another and Salah has the chance to grab his second as he races around the outside of the West Ham defence on the break.

Areola stands tall at his front post.
