West Ham 2-5 Arsenal: Gunners go second in the table after a brilliant first-half performance in the capital

West Ham will cause problems - Arteta

Arsenal beat West Ham United 5-2 at the London Stadium on Saturday evening thanks to a stunning 26-minute first-half attacking display.

The Gunners started off brilliantly, with a Gabriel header opening the scoring before a sublime team move put them 2-0 up.

And it only got better, with Martin Odegaard’s penalty and a Kai Havertz strike meaning they were 4-0 up on 36 minutes.

Miraculously, West Ham were soon back in it after Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson struck twice in as many minutes, though Bukayo Saka converted another penalty to make it 5-2 at half-time.

There was plenty of expectation ahead of the second half but it turned out to be a drab affair, with neither side having any chances of note as the visitors closed out the match to return to second in the Premier League table.

Follow updates from Arsenal v West Ham below.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

4 mins

Arsenal with plenty of possession so far, but the majority of it is in their own half. The hosts are happy to sit off them in their own third, though the Hammers are giving it away far too quickly when they do win it.

West Ham 0-0 Arsenal

2 min

A scrappy start at the London Stadium, with both sides giving up possession early on.

Bowen is the first to have any type of attacking success, but he mistakenly lets the ball go out of play thinking he’d win a corner. The goal kick is given instead.

Match facts

Arsenal have lost just one of their last 16 Premier League away games against West Ham (W10 D5), winning this exact fixture 6-0 last season.

Since the start of 2022-23, Arsenal have lost just two of their 26 London derby matches in the Premier League (W18 D6). One of these was against West Ham, which was the only one of the 26 games in which they’ve failed to score (0-2 in December 2023).

Having won 10 of their first 11 Premier League away games in 2024 (D1), Arsenal are now winless in their last four on the road (D2 L2). It’s their longest such run without a win since a run of seven between December 2019 and June 2020, the final six games of which were Mikel Arteta’s first in charge of the Gunners away from home.

Only Mohamed Salah (16) has been involved in more Premier League goals this season than Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka (12 – 4 goals, 8 assists). Indeed, Saka has both scored and assisted in three different games this term, with only Salah again doing so more (4).

How the table looks

With all of the 3pm kick-offs having finished – and with Brighton drawing 1-1 against Southampton yesterday – Arsenal have the chance to go second outright for just under 24 hours (at least).

The Gunners currently sit in fifth on 22 points, level with Chelsea and one behind Manchester City and Brighton, so a win would take them two points above those two sides (with City obviously playing tomorrow).

They would also cut Liverpool’s lead to six points, however briefly.

Match facts

West Ham have lost their last two home London derbies in the Premier League, going down 2-0 against Fulham and 3-0 against Chelsea. They last lost three in a row in December 2019, while they last did so without scoring in December 2008 – both runs included defeat to Arsenal.

The Hammers have earned seven points from their last three Premier League home games (W2 D1), as many as they had from their previous nine at the London Stadium (W1 D4 L4).

Following their 2-0 win at Newcastle last time out, West Ham are looking to pick up consecutive Premier League victories for the first time since March. Meanwhile, they could keep three consecutive clean sheets for the first time since a run of four in December/January last season, the third game of which was a 2-0 win over Arsenal.

No player has scored more Premier League goals for West Ham this season than Tomás Soucek (3). 17 of his last 18 strikes for the Hammers have either put them one goal ahead (12) or drawn them level (5) in the match.

Lopetegui: “It is about the players on the pitch and on the bench"

Julen Lopetegui, who is serving a touchline ban this weekend, told the media that it doesn’t matter as much because “it is about the players on the pitch and on the bench, who are ready to help the team to be able to compete against the best team in the Premier League, in my opinion”.

He added that Arsenal have “incredible players and a very good coach”, so today’s game will be a “big challenge”, before going on to praise Arteta’s “fantastic career as a coach”.

“He is managing Arsenal in a fantastic way. They have two teams, with top players, so we have to be ready but always put the focus back on ourselves and believe in ourselves to compete.”
