Manchester United were expected to be one of the most active Premier League clubs on transfer deadline day but they failed to make a single signing.

United were looking towards Leicester City’s English defender Harry Maguire as a potential deadline day arrival, having been put off in their pursuit of Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, while Barcelona’s Yerry Mina also remained an outside bet to arrive at Old Trafford. However, Jose Mourinho played down the prospect of signing anyone in his press conference earlier in the day.

United did manage to keep Paul Pogba at the club, with Barcelona keen to sign the midfielder if he could force his way out after another falling out with Jose Mourinho. But the failure to sign any players since the World Cup - having landed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant earlier in the summer.

As if that wasn’t enough, United kick-off the new Premier League season against Leicester tomorrow night.

Good morning and welcome to The Independent's transfer live blog, where we'll be bringing you all the latest from Manchester United throughout the day ahead of the 5pm deadline, as well as Jose Mourinho's press conference at 9am.

We start this morning with the news that emerged late last night.

After spending the summer chasing Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, United have switched targets and are considering a last-ditch move to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

The England international has seen his stock rise phenomenally since the World Cup, and after joining Leicester for £17m last summer, he could now cost as much as £75m to switch clubs today.

Our chief football writer Miguel Delaney reports that United are hoping to reduce that fee, but negotiations look set to continue throughout the day.

Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his plans for transfer deadline day.

The United manager wants TWO signings before the window shuts, but he did not sound convinced that he would be getting what he wants when he spoke earlier in the week.

I would like two more players. I don't think I'm going to have two. I think it's possible I'm going to have one.

I gave my club a list of five names a few months ago. I wait to see if it's possible to have one of these players.

It's not all about who could be coming in to Manchester United today.

Ed Woodward and the rest of the United board face a fight to keep Paul Pogba on their books, with Spanish heavyweights Barcelona sniffing around the midfielder.

The Independent revealed yesterday that Barca want Pogba to put pressure on United to force a move away from the club, much like Philippe Coutinho did with Liverpool last season. The only difference is that United are not prepared to sell Pogba under any circumstances this summer, even if another falling out with Mourinho has taken place.

Here's the latest on the situation:

Another United player who faces an uncertain future beyond today's deadline is Anthony Martial

After a less-than-smooth pre-season with United, he has been strongly linked with an Old Trafford exit this summer. The French forward left their tour of the United States early for the birth of his second child, only to incur the wrath of his manager.

We play Real Madrid and we have no more players than what we have. Antonio Valencia comes from holiday – I think too much holiday for him. His condition was not good when he was back, then injury and also go back.

Anthony Martial has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here and he is not here.

So we have Alexis (Sanchez) and (Juan) Mata who play every minute of every match and now we have Real Madrid and after that Bayern Munich and that’s our start.

Just 15 minutes until Mourinho speaks to the media for the first time this season. What do we need to know?

Will United sign two players, one player, anyone?

Are any players heading for the exit?

Have Barcelona bid for Paul Pogba?

Will Anthony Martial leave?

What's the latest team news ahead of tomorrow's Premier League opener against Leicester?

We'll have all the answers shortly.

The Happy One? The Grumpy One? The I Haven't Got Any New Players One?

Jose Mourinho on Manchester United's deadline day plans...

I'm not confident. The market closes today. It's time at least for me to stop thinking about the market, because the market will be closed. I will have to focus on the players I have and in relation these first couple of matches - three matches - is to focus on the players that are available. I'm not thinking about the list of players.

Jose Mourinho on if there will be any players in or out today?

The information I have is no.

Jose Mourinho on whether the club have gone backwards...

My view is that first of all it's difficult for me to believe we finished second. When I listen, when I read, it's difficult to believe we finished second because you are capable of making people who finish second were relegated.

You are capable of making people who win nothing and finish below us look like serial winners. Its difficult for me to believe we finished second. Sometimes its also difficult to believe I won eight championships and three Premier Leagues, and I keep thinking the second position last year was one of my biggest achievements in England.
