Premier League clubs complete big deals in the final hours of transfer deadline day

It was a tremendous transfer deadline day with several transfers completed with minutes to spare as the Premier League dominated the market once again in terms of total spend.

There were big deals elsewhere though, including Eduardo Camavinga signing for Real Madrid from Stade Rennais, but the one that didn’t happen dominated the headlines: Kylian Mbappe stays at Paris Saint-Germain, that’s despite the France international having just one year remaining on his contract and Real Madrid making a bid of £172m (€200m).

For PSG, it was all about the Champions League and they even splashed out late on Nuno Mendes to ram home the point and prove their strength to resist Los Blancos in the ongoing power struggle.

Cristiano Ronaldo is now officially a Manchester United player and was unveiled in a red shirt - though we now await what number he will wear at Old Trafford in his second spell at the club. The return of the Portuguese allowed Daniel James to move on and finally join Leeds United for £25m two years after coming as close as possible to signing for a team when he left Swansea.

Chelsea had a fine window, signing Romelu Lukaku and adding Saul Niguez late on via a loan, with an option to buy, though they did miss out on one big deal, centre-back Jules Kounde stays at Sevilla despite interest from the Blues.

Arsenal were the other busy club as the deadline expired, retaining the disgruntled Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who had spoken out on his desire to leave, while allowing Hector Bellerin to join Real Betis on loan and bringing in Japan right-back Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna for around £17m.

There is still the potential to add free agents, which will be the route for Serge Aurier after his Tottenham contract was mutually ended, with Spurs signing Emerson Royal from Barcelona - here’s all the latest news and reaction to the summer transfer window.

Blackpool sign Sterling on one-year loan deal

No, not that one.

Blackpool have announced the signing of Chelsea man Dujon Sterling on a one-year loan deal.

Speaking about the move, the 21-year-old right-back said: “I knew there was interest a couple of weeks ago and I am happy to be here now.

“I feel in the best shape of my life, and this is the test that I need. The gaffer has put his trust in me and hopefully I can repay that trust.”

Emerson does not train with Barcelona ahead of Tottenham deal

Barcelona full-back Emerson Royal has not shown up for training today as he looks to complete his switch to Tottenham.

Journalist Maria Garrido has reported that he is close to signing for Spurs but there is still work to do today.

Nothing confirmed as of yet.

Maitland-Niles still an Arsenal player

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has so far failed in his attempt to force a move to Everton before the end of the transfer window.

The versatile Englishman posted on Instagram yesterday with a message which read: “All I wanna do is go where I’m wanted and where I’m gonna play @arsenal.”

But that does not seem to have forced Arsenal’s hand and they appear to be keen on keeping him.

Put your transfer questions to Miguel Delaney

Any transfer window in which Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo both move clubs was bound to go down as a classic. The question now is whether any other big names will follow before the window closes.

Ronaldo’s move from Juventus to Manchester United on Friday shocked football, not least because only hours earlier Manchester City had been favourites for his signature. The Portuguese international will become available for United after the international transfer window.

After Messi’s transfer from Barcelona to PSG, it is no secret that the biggest clubs still have money available to spend on transfer fees and wages. So who else might follow on the final day of the transfer window?

The Independent’s chief football writer Miguel Delaney will be on hand on Tuesday afternoon (31 August) at 1.30pm to answer all your questions about what the remaining hours of this summer’s transfer window might have to offer.

Transfer Deadline Day ask me anything live with Miguel Delaney

Ask Miguel Delaney anything about the final few hours of this summer’s transfer window and what to expect before 11pm on Tuesday

Burnley interested in Wales defender Roberts

Burnley are reportedly interested in signing Wales full-back Conor Roberts from Swansea City, according to Wales Online.

The 25-year-old is currently out with a groin injury that he suffered at the European Championships but could still make a late move before the window shuts.

Burnley have picked up just one point from their opening three Premier League games of the season.

Man Utd’s James to Leeds a done deal

Manchester United have sold Daniel James to Leeds for £25 million. Everything has been agreed and paperworks signed.

There were reports that Everton were looking to make a late move to secure the winger but that never materialised.

Man Utd make a £10 million profit on the £15 million they signed James for from Swansea two years ago.

Rodriguez to follow Kean?

Everton have offloaded one unwanted player already today in Moise Kean, who has joined Juventus on a two-year loan deal.

Now they will look to get rid of former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich forward James Rodriguez as they look to further reduce their wage bill.

But can they find a suitor before the window slams shut?

Lingard expected to stay at Manchester United

Jesse Lingard looks set to stay at Manchester United as the end of the transfer window grows ever closer.

The England forward enjoyed a sensational spell at West Ham last season but returned to Old Trafford despite a lack of game time in recent years.

An offer will be considered if one comes in before the window shuts, but there is no guarantees it will be accepted.

Mbappe ‘wants to play with Messi’ at PSG

Kylian Mbappe is set to stay at Paris Saint-Germain because he ‘wants to play with Lionel Messi’, according to BBC journalist Julien Laurens.

The 22-year-old looked set to join Real Madrid before the end of the window but talks now appear to have stalled.

Laurens said: “PSG are waiting. The negotiation has stopped between the two clubs, Real Madrid don’t want to make a new offer, they’ve made their second offer of $180m (£130.5m) and PSG are saying: ‘If you want in, you’ll have to go higher - otherwise we won’t sell.’

“Mbappe is happy to stay [at PSG] because he wants to play with Messi, he says to people in private: ‘This is Messi, he’s incredible, you should see him in training.’

“He loves playing with [Achraf] Hakimi, who provided him with an assist for the second goal [Reims 0-2 PSG - Sun, 29 Aug] and they have a real bromance together.

“He’d be happy to stay. He said to the club: ‘I’m happy to stay, but I will not extend. I would leave on a free in a year’s time. It’s up to you now, if you want to get some money for me, find a deal with Real Madrid and I will go now and you will get the money. But if you don’t mind not getting the money, I will go in a year and I will stay - I want to play with Neymar and Messi and Hakimi, but there will be no money for you in 12 months’ time.’

“I think for $200m they’d let him go and try to find a replacement from somewhere. If there’s not a new offer, I think they’ll say it’s not enough and they will keep him.”
