Spurred on by injustice and indignation, Southampton launched a resounding late fightback to snatch victory and leave Tottenham Hotspur’s top-four hopes sodden and deflated. As the full-time whistle blew, Ralph Hasenhuttl sank to his knees in the dugout and roared into the rain with the sort of fervour that had matched his side’s courage. Twice they had trailed Tottenham only to rally spectacularly as Armando Broja cancelled out Jan Bednarek’s own goal before Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams scored near-identical headers within the space of three frantic minutes to seal a 3-2 victory in north London. It was Spurs’ second that had caused such controversy and ultimately served to ignite Southampton’s fury.

What appeared a clear foul in the build-up had left Broja crumpled on the halfway line with a head injury, but play was allowed to continue and Son Heung-min thought he had snatched all three points for Spurs. Antonio Conte became so incensed by Southampton’s protests that he had to be restrained by his assistants but by full-time the Italian’s face was bleak and almost disbelieving. Presented with a great chance to gain a foothold in the top-four race, this defeat will stain long after the clothes have dried, but perhaps that was fitting on a night when Spurs defended within themselves and Southampton played out of their skin.. Follow all the reaction from Tottenham vs Southampton below:

Reaction from Son Heung-min

Tottenham’s Son Heung-min gave his post-match thoughts and said that Spurs are ‘very disappointed’ after conceding three goals at home and losing the game. He said:

To be honest, very disappointed and gutted. Especially being at home and leading. We should do much better than this, conceding the same goals in five minutes. Very disappointing.

“When you play at home, we knew Southampton would be pushing hard and being aggressive. We struggled in the first half but had chances to score. Obviously really disappointed at half time, we pressed high in the second half but could have finished the game early. A disappointing result.

“Everyone is dropping points and it is a disappointing result. We are not looking at any other teams and want to finish as high as possible. We need go again, bounce back and it is going to be a tough night.

“We are so pleased he (Antonio Conte) is giving us so much positive vibes and energy and a winning mentality. If we lose, players should take responsibility. We have to bring back on Sunday where we should be.”

Ruthless Manchester City punish Brentford mistakes to go 12 points clear at the top

Brentford may be tempted to come away from this first-ever visit to the Etihad wondering what might have been had two mistakes not punctured what was otherwise a solid and respectable showing against the closest thing that the Premier League has to an unstoppable force.

Neither of Manchester City’s goals would have come about were it not for Mads Roerslev’s clumsy concession of a penalty and a wayward pass by goalkeeper David Raya, after all. The thing with Pep Guardiola’s side, however, is you cannot expect that any inch gained will not be ruthlessly exploited and even then, they will usually find a way to beat you.

This return to winning ways in the Premier League after that draw at St Mary’s last month saw league leaders move 12 points clear at the top of the table ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Leicester City at Anfield on Thursday night, having played twice more than their closest challengers.

Wilfried Zaha scores and misses penalty as Crystal Palace draw at Norwich

Wilfried Zaha’s night went from the sublime to the ridiculous with a superb solo equaliser followed by an awful penalty miss as Crystal Palace came from behind to draw 1-1 at Norwich.

The Canaries needed a win to move out of the Premier League relegation zone but they had to settle for a point at Carrow Road.

Teemu Pukki’s first goal in over 11 and a half hours had the hosts ahead after just 39 seconds but Dean Smith’s side could not make it four wins from four.

Reaction from matchwinner Che Adams

A delighted Che Adams spoke to BT Sport after the match and said his teammates were ‘buzzing’ about winning the game. He said:

We could have won it in the first half but got over the line and are buzzing now.

“For them to come out and score was a kick in the teeth but we managed to turn it around.

“I caught the flight of the ball and managed to head it on goal. Everyone works so hard day in day out and we scraped it again. They had a disallowed goal but we stuck together and got the three points.

“Against teams like Tottenham, they are going to punish you but we are full of confidence going into the weekend against Manchester United at Old Trafford. This is a hard place to come and they are a great team.”

Tottenham 2 - 3 Southampton

What a game between Tottenham and Southampton. Saints twice came from behind to win the match thanks to James Ward-Prowse’s excellent deliveries. Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams were the second half heroes and they’ll remember this one fondly.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

Manchester City completed a comfortable 2-0 victory over Brentford who continue to struggle and are in danger of being dragged into the relegation battle unless they can pick up some points soon.

Norwich City drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace but remain in the relegation zone.

Aston Villa and Leeds are still playing, this game is currently 3-3 with both teams going for the win.

Tottenham 2 - 3 Southampton

That’s a big win for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men! They continue their great run and move up to 10th in the table.

Tottenham have suffered back-to-back Premier League defeats and fail to close the gap on the top four. They’re still in a decent position in the league table but that result will sting.

Full-time: Tottenham 2 - 3 Southampton

90+6 mins: What drama at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs controlled much of the second half and were rewarded with a goal from Son Heung-min. Southampton then dug deep and two beautiful crosses from James Ward-Prowse broke down the Tottenham defence and the Saints came from behind to win!

Steven Bergwijn thought he’d rescued a point right at the end of the match but his goal was chalked off by VAR!

NO GOAL!

Tottenham 2 - 3 Southampton

90+4 mins: No he doesn’t! VAR took a look at the goal and finds Bergwijn was a couple of inches offside as the ball come into the box for him. Southampton get a reprieve!
