Tottenham Hotspur gained a slender advantage in their League Cup semi-final against London rivals Chelsea as Harry Kane's penalty earned them a 1-0 win in the first leg at Wembley on Tuesday.

Kane's 26th-minute spot kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino's side will be slight favourites to reach the final although there is plenty of work still to do.

The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty with the help of VAR after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Key fact

Spurs and Chelsea are set to meet in a League Cup semi-final for the third time, having also done so in 1971-72 and 2001-02 - the only fixture to be played more often at this stage is Arsenal against Spurs (four occasions).

82 minutes

Erik Lamela is certainly combative, and his arm rather flies into Eden Hazard's face as he steps across the Belgian.

A booking, and a free kick.

Olivier Giroud is waiting, but Hazard's delivery is poor and headed away by Spurs.

Eden Hazard's cross is whipped about three yards from goal and Paulo Gazzaniga fumbles, but Davinson Sanchez is there to hook away.

A ball then bounces favourably for Marcos Alonso but Kieran Trippier is behind the Spaniard's drive

87 minutes

Harry Kane frees Erik Lamela with a nice curling pass along the floor but Marcos Alonso recovers to get goal side of the substitute, and though Lamela regains possession he has clearly fouled the left back.

One academy graduate replaces another in midfield for Spurs as Oliver Skipp is sent for. Harry Winks trudges off.

Into three added minutes, and Spurs' final change will be Fernando Llorente for Christian Eriksen to add size to help defuse any late crosses and such.

Seconds left as Spurs just about clear a corner...

And that's that at Wembley. Spurs go into the second leg 1-0 ahead after Harry Kane's VAR assisted penalty.

1-0. You'd imagine both sides will take that heading into the second leg at Stamford Bridge in two weeks time.

Tottenham will back themselves to get at least a draw, and Chelsea will be confident in front of their home crowd.

In many ways, this game felt like a prelude to a more expansive affair in the second leg. We'll see if that is the case...

Unfortunate news of a hopefully isolated incident emerging from Wembley.
