One of those matches that was bursting at the seams, but where everyone felt they could have had a bit more.

It was also one of the games of the season, that may go some way to deciding the season. There is now the daylight of three points between Liverpool and Manchester City, although there was very little clarity to the decisions that dictated this pulsating 2-2 draw between Jurgen Klopp’s team and Tottenham Hotspur.

That will give rise to more rounds of debate over who exactly benefits from what, although that no longer just applies to arguments about circuit-breakers or Covid-enforced spells without games here. There was also the officiating, particularly after the England captain wasn’t sent off but the Scottish captain was.

The oddity will be that both sides can claim justice was done and that they were the victims of injustice.

At the very least, supporters also got the brilliant match that it felt like the game deserved, especially amid a spell when there are renewed arguments over whether the sport should be suspended for a time.

Kane speaks to Sky Sports

Harry Kane gave his reaction to Sky Sports following the game and claimed that his yellow card for a tackle on Andy Robertson definitely wasn’t a red card offence. He said:

It was a great game to be involved in and am sure it was a great game to watch as well. There were plenty of chances at both ends. We had some clear chances that we had to do better with to be honest. Overall it was a tough battle against a very good side. We move forward to the next one now.

“When we were 1-0 up we had two clear-cut chances. Sonny [Son Heung-min] tried to take on the keeper and he made a great save from Dele [Alli]’s. If we score both of those the game is clear. You’re playing against a top side and you have to take your chances and we had more than enough to win the game. Overall I thought it was a great performance.

“It was nice to score, it’s been a few games since I scored especially here at home in the Premier League but on another day there’s a couple more I could have taken.

“[About his tackle on Robertson being a red card] No. Definitely not. It was a strong tackle but I thought I won the ball. Obviously I haven’t seen it back. When you are playing against top sides and fighting for points sometimes there’ll be strong tackles. They checked it and we move on.

“It didn’t feel like it and Andy on the pitch said, ‘you just caught my foot’. When you slow things down it makes it look a little worse than it is. That’s what VAR is there for.”

Reaction from Diogo Jota

Liverpool’s Diogo Jota spoke to Sky Sports after the game who says a point from the game is an ‘okay’ result for Liverpool. He said:

They haven’t had a game for two weeks and we’ve been playing. It was pretty intense. Ten men in the end doesn’t help.

“[Robertson’s red card] is what it is. We lost the tempo there but it happens in football. It’s hard to say fair in football. The amount of chances both teams had, a point is OK.”

Tottenham 2 - 2 Liverpool

A brilliant hat-trick from Andy Robertson who is the first player to score, assist and be sent off in a Premier League game since Aleksandar Mitrovic in May 2016.

Tottenham 2 - 2 Liverpool

Just a point for Liverpool from their trip to London means that Manchester City are top of the table at Christmas with a three point lead over the Reds in second. Tottenham remain seventh but have games in hand on those above them in the table.

Full-time: Tottenham 2 - 2 Liverpool

90+6 mins: What a game! The points a shared and that is probably the fairest result. Both teams gave it their all and the match had everything apart from a goal from Mo Salah.

The goalkeepers were fantastic, Tottenham were lightning quick on the counter-attack and Liverpool aggressive on the ball. Andy Robertson’s red card nullified their attacking prowess but they held on and earned a point.

Tottenham 2 - 2 Liverpool

90+3 mins: Joe Gomez comes on to replace Diogo Jota. Jurgen Klopp might be thinking that a point is good enough now, Liverpool have switched to a back three though. They’re still going for the win.

Tsimikas swings a cross into the box but Spurs get it clear. They fly up the pitch and Royal chips the ball over the Liverpool backline in play in Harry Kane. He knocks it into the box and pulls a pass back to Son. Son turns the ball towards goal but Alisson keeps it out and the offside flag goes up!

Tottenham 2 - 2 Liverpool

90 mins: Six minutes of added time to play! Plenty of time for someone to get a winner.

Tottenham 2 - 2 Liverpool

89 mins: Liverpool sweep down the left wing before knocking the ball back to Milner. He dinks the ball into the box and almost finds Jota but the pass goes narrowly over his head and Lloris scoops it up.
