Tottenham Hotspur blew a chance to strengthen their grip on fourth place in the Premier League as they suffered a dramatic, late 1-0 home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Antonio Conte’s side produced a lacklustre display and looked set for a frustrating stalemate before Leandro Trossard made things even worse with a 90th-minute winner.

After four successive wins, the pre-match mood in north London was one of optimism but Tottenham’s performance was in stark contrast to the bright spring sunshine. They managed only one goal attempt in a dismal first half in which Brighton were by far the better side.

Spurs showed a little more urgency after the break with Son Heung-min twice having shots blocked, but the Seagulls always carried the greater goal threat and deservedly took the points when Trossard cut in from the left and beat Hugo Lloris with a low angled shot with the outside of his foot.

30 mins: Oh close. What a chance this could have been for Brighton. They win a corner that is swung into the middle of the box. It gets flicked over to the back post where Alexis Mac Allister is arriving for a tap in. Rodrigo Bentancur sticks out his left leg and gets the slightest of touches to the ball as it hits his shin but that’s enough to divert it behind the Brighton forward and stop the visitors from opening the scoring.

27 mins: Dejan Kulusevski is a lucky man. He throws an elbow at Marc Cucurella after the Brighton defender wins the ball after a tussle. Kulusevski only brushes Cucurella with his outburst but the referee spots it and pulls out a card. More contact and he could have been looking at a red.
