Follow live coverage as Southampton face Manchester City in the Premier League today.

Manchester City are reigning champions after beating Liverpool to the finish line in a neck-and-neck 2021/22 title race where a comeback win on the final day of the season against Aston Villa secured a fourth title in five years for Pep Guardiola's side.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds were on course for a quadruple last season but were forced to settle for just an FA Cup and Carabao Cup win and will return trying to win the title again just as they did in 2020.

It was a dramatic season for Chelsea a year ago with Roman Abramovich now replaced by Todd Boehly as owner in west London. He will want an instant return on his hefty investment at Stamford Bridge while Tottenham, back in the Champions League, will want to kick on once more too.

It's not all about the action at the top though with Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest promoted to the top tier for 2021/22 and hoping to hold their own against the best English football has to offer and avoid the drop.

We will bring you all the action and updates from today's game in the live blog below:

A 4-1 defeat leaves Southampton firmly in the mire, rock-bottom of the table and four points from safety, with their goal difference also taking a negative hit in this game. It's going to take something very special for them to escape from here, but with a log-jam of teams separated by very few points above them, anything is possible in the last eight games. City, on the other hand, have nine games left in their pursuit of a third consecutive Premier League title, and performances as ruthless as the one we've seen at St. Mary's will give them every chance of chasing down Arsenal to achieve it.

Jack Grealish was a constant threat down the left edge for City, scoring their second goal and setting up their third within 10 minutes of each other. All three of the England playmaker's shots were on target, while he also created two big chances, including the assist, from 26 final-third passes. Grealish engaged in 11 duels, including three dribbles, and twice won possession via a tackle and interception apiece. After a mixed first season at Eastlands, he's finally arrived for Pep Guardiola's side in 2022-23, and is playing a crucial role as they chase down Arsenal at the Premier League's summit.

Full-time, and City round off another routine victory with a three-goal haul in the second half. Grealish's early finish, coming at the second attempt after a Bazunu save, doubled their first-half advantage, before the Englishman turned provider for Haaland's second goal, scored via an outstanding acrobatic volley. Substitute Mara replied with a cool finish for Southampton, but the celebrations hadn't even died down before City won a penalty, dispatched by Alvarez for their fourth. Dominant, relentless, and free-scoring, City close Arsenal's lead at the top to five points, with their key men rising to the task on the south coast.
