Follow live coverage as Southampton face Chelsea today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.
The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Southampton vs Chelsea
Chelsea extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to six matches as they thrash Southampton 5-1 at St Mary's. A Disasi header gave the Blues an early lead before the hosts pulled level just minutes later courtesy of an Aribo finish. That was as good as it got for Saints as Nkunku capitalised on a mistake from the goalkeeper and Madueke curled an effort into the bottom corner to put the Blues in a commnading position. Southampton's task was made tougher before half-time as Stephens was sent off following a challenge on Cucurella. The second half was a dominant display from the visitors. They scored two further goals thanks to Palmer and a first for the club for Sancho but it could have been more had it not been for Lumley in goal. The Saints remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table and travel to Aston Villa next. They had an xG of 1.47. Chelsea had an xG of 5.29. They move up to second in the table and face London rivals Tottenham next. Thanks for joining me and goodbye.
