Serbia substitute Luka Jovic headed a last-gasp equaliser to cancel out Zan Karnicnik’s opener and salvage a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in an entertaining Group C clash at Euro 2024 on Thursday.

Both sides hit the woodwork and had periods where they dominated possession and created chances at the Munich Football Arena in a game of end-to-end play at times. Just like against England, Serbia started slowly and handed the initiative to Slovenia whose first big chance came when Timi Elsnik hit the near post after dribbling into the box in the first half.

Slovenia broke the deadlock after the break with a brilliantly worked goal from right-back man-of-the-match Karnicnik who put them on the brink of their first ever Euros win. Slovenia had missed several good chances until Karnicnik drove upfield from the edge of his own penalty area, released the ball to Elsnik and then met the return cross to slot the ball past Predrag Rajkovic in the 69th minute.

Serbia ratcheted up the pressure looking for an equalizer with veteran striker Aleksandar Mitrovic hitting the post, and they finally levelled when Jovic nodded home a corner five minutes into added time to leave their opponents distraught. Serbia failed to capitalise on periods of superiority despite the menace of Mitrovic, who saw a close range shot deflected by Karnicnik onto the woodwork, until Jovic struck.

The result at the Munich Football Arena put Slovenia in second place on two points with group leaders England to come in their third and final Group C game. Serbia, bottom with one point, face Denmark next. Relive all the action and follow the reaction from a thrilling Group C match:

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

41 mins: Mitrovic and Tadic play the ball to each other in the box, but there are too many defenders in the box for them to carve out space to shoot and Slovenia are able to clear their lines.

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

39 mins: At the other end, Vlahovic tries for goal from a free kick, but the wall blocks his initial shot, and the following rebound.

POST! Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

38 minutes: POST! Elsnik ran into the box and managed to get a shot underway, he just sliced across it and caught the inside of the post!

The following ball fell to Sesko, who hit his shot over the bar. That was by far the best chance of the match.

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

34 mins: Slovenia are trying to attack on the break, but can’t quite get their passing accuracy right, allowing the Serbia defence and midfield to make the interception and slow the play down.

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

32 mins: Serbia have a corner and it almost fell to Mitrovic who was waiting at the far post! It was a great delivery that just bounced in front of the former Fulham striker who was trying to head that into the back of the net.

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

30 mins: Serbia are getting into the game more now, but Slovenia have essentially got all their players organised behind the ball and it’s going to be difficult to find a way through that!

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

29 mins: Bijol receives a talking too for a clumsy foul on Mitrovic, who went down fairly heavily.

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

27 mins: Serbia have had their first chance of the match!

The cross was in low, and flat, and slightly behind Vlahovic, who managed to get a decent header on it but Oblak was able to make the save.

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

25 mins: A low cross has to be pushed away by Rajkovic, and it’s all going Slovenia’s way so far.

It feels like it’s been quite a few minutes since Serbia last had significant possession in the Slovenia half.

Sonia Twigg20 June 2024 14:25

Serbia 0-0 Slovenia

23 mins: Sesko had the ball on the edge of the box, and looked to start a run into a position to carve out a shot when he was intercepted and Slovenia will have a corner.

It’s taken short, and when Janza does manage to curl the ball in, it’s straight into the hands of Rajkovic.
