World Cup spot is "guaranteed" says Portugal coach Santos despite Serbia shock

Scotland boosted their hopes of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a memorable 2-0 win over group-winners Denmark on Monday evening.

The Danes had won all nine of their qualifiers and already booked their place in Qatar ahead of the clash at Hampden Park, but it was Steve Clarke’s side who were on the front foot from the outset. The Scots were seeking a sixth successive victory and deservedly found the breakthrough 10 minutes before half-time when a well-worked corner saw Liam Cooper nod the ball back for John Souttar to head home from close range. Denmark struggled to conjure up any clear-cut openings, with Andreas Cornelius coming closest from a header smartly saved by Craig Gordon – although the flag later went up for an earlier offside.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser in the second half but could not find a way through a resilient Scotland defence. Andreas Skov Olsen tested Gordon in the 83rd minute as his low shot was parried away, then substitute Mikael Uhre failed to make proper contact with the ball when it bounced down in front of him inside the Scotland box, his effort gathered by Scotland’s No1.

Scotland’s three points were sealed moments later when Che Adams was played through by Southampton teammate Stuart Armstrong and the Saints striker swept home beyond the despairing dive of Kasper Schmeichel. The victory means Scotland will now be seeded for the World Cup play-offs next March, and they will host their semi-final fixture.

Follow all the post-match reaction from Scotland vs Denmark below.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

40 mins: Are Denmark about to lose their first game since the European Championships?

Scotland have totally outplayed them for 40 minutes here. One. Way. Traffic.

Scotland 1-0 Denmark

38 mins: Aaaaaand breathe. That was a moment for all of Scotland to saviour.

But they have to stay alert as soon as play gets back underway. Maehle storms down the left and earns a corner for the away side, their first of the game.

It comes to nothing though. Scotland are defending absolutely superbly.

GOAL! Scotland 1-0 Denmark (Souttar, 35)

35 mins: CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!

Scotland’s seventh corner presents an eighth and it’s from that one where the home side find the breakthrough!

McGinn swings it all the way to the back post and when it’s knocked back into the six-yard box John Souttar is there to flick home from close range!

Pandemonium at Hampden!

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

34 mins: Big chance for Scotland! Denmark are pressing up the pitch and caught napping by the Scots.

It’s two-on-one as Robertson brings it down for Adams. The Saints man looks up and opts to shoot but it’s blocked behind by Kjaer. He should have given it back to Robertson! The Liverpool man was open inside the box. Wrong decision.

It’s coming though...

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

32 mins: Denmark just taking the sting out of the game a little as they knock it around at the back. Dare I say Schmeichel is already running down the clock in this first half?

If there is going to be a goal before the break, it is almost certainly going to come from the home team.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

Denmark coach Hjulmand will know his team are in a dogfight here. They have been largely outplayed for the opening 30 minutes.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

29 mins: Scotland on the march again! Robertson crosses from the left and it falls to McGinn whose shot is blocked behind for a corner - the hosts fifth already!

It’s swung in by McGinn and Kjaer has to get back on the goal line to preventing it going straight in at the near post!

The Danes on the ropes.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

28 mins: Jannik Vestergaard isn’t known for his distribution and his latest pass showcases why.

The Leicester defender tries to curl a sweeping ball towards the back post but it’s around 20 yards too deep.

Maybe he was picking out someone he knew in the front row? Benefit of the doubt.

Scotland 0-0 Denmark

26 mins: Few breaks in play here as a couple of cheap free-kicks and offsides are given.

Denmark composing themselves after a strong spell for the hosts.

As an Englishman, I endorse this.
