Netherlands were too good as they saw off Romania in a 3-0 win
A much-improved Netherlands saw off Romania to book their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
Cody Gakpo fired in a powerful opening goal and Donyell Malen’s second-half double clinched the 3-0 victory.
The Dutch will now play either Austria or Turkey in the quarter-finals in Berlin on Saturday. Austria produced a brilliant performance to beat Netherlands 3-2 in the group stage.

A tenacious Cody Gakpo stays in the fight even as Radu Dragusin appears to be ushering him out of play, stabbing his studs at the ball before it crosses the line. He hurries to continue to keep the ball in play and cut back to Donyell Malen, who applies the finishing touches.

Romania captain Nicolae Stanciu is absolutely furious as his side are halted on a promising counter-attack for what is supposedly a high boot from Denis Alibec. That’s mightily unfortunate for Romania, Alibec making no contact with Denzel Dumfries but the Dutch defender throwing himself to the floor regardless. Stanciu’s protestations earn him a booking from referee Felix Zwayer, to rub salt in the wound.

A strike of luck that nearly gifts the Netherlands a goal! Bogdan Racovitan boots the ball in the direction of the touchline but hasn’t accounted for the presence of Xavi Simons in his path, a deflection a matter of inches away with the defender close to contriving to create a bizarre second for the opposition.

A booking for Denzel Dumfries for time-wasting, the right-back taking an age to deliver a throw-in as the Romania fans whistle and holler.
