The 2020 runners-up looked set for a place in the last eight at half-time with Kylian Mbappe on target again having scored the only goal at Parc des Princes last month.

Fellow Frenchman Benzema stole the show though with a hat-trick after the break and his final two goals were separated by just 106 seconds in a 3-1 win that left Mauricio Pochettino’s men stunned with the pressure now ramped up on the former Tottenham boss.

Thomas Tuchel’s Paris Saint-Germain got the better of a Real Madrid side coached by Zinédine Zidane in the 2019/20 Champions League group stage, picking up four points from their two games.

Goals from former Madrid midfielder Ángel Di María x2 and Thomas Meunier secured a 3-0 home win at the Parc des Princes in the first game before Kylian Mbappé and Pablo Sarabia rescued a point for Paris at the Santiago Bernabéu in the second game after Karim Benzema had scored twice for the Spanish side.

Real Madrid vs PSG: Team changes

Carlo Ancelotti makes four changes to the Real Madrid team that swept Real Sociedad aside last time out. Nacho, Toni Kroos, Federico Valverde and Marco Asensio all come into the starting line-up with Ferland Mendy, Casemiro, Eduardo Camavinga and Rodrygo dropping out.

Neymar, Lionel Messi, Marco Verratti and Marquinhos are the only players that remain in the team that lost to Nice at the weekend. PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino would have had an eye on starting a strong team this evening and gave a few of his more experienced players the game off. Kylian Mbappe starts for Paris.

Real Madrid vs PSG

How did they get here?

This season PSG were forced to settle for second place behind 2020/21 runners-up Manchester City in Group A, while Real Madrid held off Inter Milan to claim first place in Group D.

After the round of 16 draw had to be redone due to a fault with the system the first time around, these two European giants came out against each other.

Madrid eliminated Paris at this stage of the 2017/18 Champions League en route to winning the competition for the third year running, although the French club had come out on top in the two previous knockout ties between the clubs.
