Klopp on Real task: 'If there is only a 1 per cent chance I would like to give it a try'

Liverpool’s impossible job against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu proved exactly that as there was no dramatic comeback and a 1-0 defeat saw them exit the Champions League without much of a fight.

All the damage had been done in the first leg but even with a 5-2 deficit there remained the romantic notion among the die-hards and dreamers that Jurgen Klopp’s side could fashion a performance to rival that of Istanbul 2005 or Anfield 2019 against Barcelona.

Klopp gave his side a one per cent chance ahead of the game but had it not been for the brilliance of goalkeeper Alisson Becker all hope would have been extinguished in the opening quarter.

This was the 14-time winners’ 300th Champions League match and all that experience showed with a balanced and controlled display of sharp attacking and tidy defending capped by a goal from their long-time nemesis Karim Benzema. However, it may be Liverpool’s last in the competition for a while unless they can iron out wild inconsistencies in their domestic form.

Relive the action as Liverpool exit the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid:

The damage was done in the first leg when Real Madrid pumped five poast them but Karim Benzema ensured that Madrid keep their strong home record in check against the Reds.

Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool (6-2 agg)

81 mins: That’s that then. If Real Madrid scored at any stage Liverpool were virtually out of the tie. With 10 minutes to go and needing four goals the Reds have no chance of a comeback.

Karim Benzema is taken off now after pulling up gingerly. Rodrygo comes on to replace him.

GOAL! Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool (6-2 agg) - Benzema, 78'⚽️

78 mins: There’s the goal and, of course, it’s gone to Real Madrid. Eduardo Camavinga threads a lovely pass up to Karim Benzema who gives it to Vinicius Junior inside the ball.

Vinicius misses the shot when shooting on the turn but pokes it across to his captain from the floor. Benzema has the simplest of tap-ins to ensure Madrid are heading into the next round.

Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool (5-2 agg)

75 mins: Alexander-Arnold wins the ball high up the pitch but sends a poor ball into the box and forces Gakpo wide. He brings the ball under control but is sandwiched between Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao and loses possession.

Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool (5-2 agg)

72 mins: Into the final 20 minutes and Liverpool need a couple of miracles. I don’t think one would be enough for them at this stage.

Real Madrid have been too savvy and too good.

Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool (5-2 agg)

69 mins: Close! Vinicius is sent the ball as he runs down the left wing. He darts inside and rolls a pass over to Benzema just inside the box.

Benzema let the ball go across his body before drilling his shot over the top of the crossbar!

Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool (5-2 agg)

66 mins: Real Madrid have done their job expertly. They’re so confident in possession that Liverpool have found themselves chasing the ball around for much of the game.

When the Reds go get control misplaced passes drain all the momentum out of their attacks.

Michael Jones15 March 2023 21:26

Real Madrid 0-0 Liverpool (5-2 agg)

63 mins: Antonio Rudiger comes on a rare foray into the Liverpool half and slips the ball to Nacho who makes an overlapping run in behind Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Nacho’s cutback is aimed towards Karim Benzema but he can’t quite pick him out and Ibrahima Konate is on hand to boot it away.
