David Moyes says dramatic draw with Tottenham sparked West Ham upturn
David Moyes feels West Ham’s last visit to Tottenham kick-started their transformation from Premier League relegation candidates to top-four challengers.
In October 2020, the Hammers found themselves 3-0 down to their derby rivals after only 16 minutes and still trailed by the same margin with eight minutes remaining.
But Fabian Balbuena pulled one back and a Davinson Sanchez own goal set up a grandstand finish capped by a memorable Manuel Lanzini strike to snatch an unlikely point.
Moyes, who returns to Spurs with West Ham on Sunday, said: “I think sometimes in football, managers will tell you there are things which can completely change the outcome of your season.
“I think that gave us huge confidence and momentum, coming from 3-0 down to get back to 3-3 against Tottenham.”

West Ham’s club captain, Mark Noble, reacted to their brilliant victory over Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday. The Irons came from a goal behind after the first leg to score twice at the London Stadium and progress into the quarter-finals of the European competition in what Noble says was ‘an incredible night’. He said:
“It was an incredible night. I take my hat off to the support that was in here tonight, it was incredible. The fans knew what we needed to get through, to support the players and the noise was phenomenal. I really believe that’s what got us over the line tonight.
“It’s a case of a group of players who are so close and so tight-knit that pull in the right direction for one another. We’ve got some outstanding players as well – and you’ve got to remember that we’ve missed Jarrod Bowen these last two ties.
“It’s phenomenal and for me personally to witness this tonight is just incredible and I really believe we can do something special.”

Whether it’s a team at the bottom of the league or a team at the top of the league, it’s an important game – it always is. It’s a derby for West Ham and for Tottenham, so we know it’s a difficult game.
“I think the team have been galvanised by some of our performances. We played very well at Liverpool. We performed well against Aston Villa the other week, so I think there are just signs our form is improving.
“Last night, I wasn’t surprised by us getting the result because I felt we could do it, against a really good and experienced team who are doing so well in Spain.
“Overall, we’ll go into the Tottenham game and we have to just take it like we would any other game, but we know the importance of it.”
