Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final. They’ve beaten Paris Saint-Germain twice, 1-0 in each leg of this semi-final tie to become the first team to secure their place in the European showpiece at Wembley in June.

On a frustrating night for PSG the hosts were unable to convert a flurry of chances to overturn the existing deficit. With the forward line lacking a clinical touch it was left to Gianluigi Donnarumma to deny Karim Adeyemi the opening goal with a reactionary save in the first half.

Yet, it was the visitors who eventually broke the deadlock. From a corner, Mats Hummels drifted behind Lucas Beraldo and headed the ball into the back of the net to, momentarily, silence the home supporters.

Dortmund boss, Edin Terzic, then made changes and switched to a back five formation which afforded PSG lots of possession. Cross after cross came into the box with the French side hitting the woodwork four times inside the 90 minutes. The ball wouldn’t go in though and Dortmund held on to keep their European title hopes alive.

Borussia Dortmund defy odds and financial disparity to reach Europe’s grandest stage

This wasn’t supposed to happen. Not in a Champions League dominated by the same familiar faces, by the superpowers and the Premier League’s moneyed elite. Not for the club who sold Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland or the team many expected to perish in the group of death or the side who blew the Bundesliga on the final day of last season. Not for Edin Terzic, the nice-guy manager who has spent parts of his reign seemingly in danger of being replaced.

But Borussia Dortmund are in the Champions League final. Perceived as the weakest side in the last eight, seen as the outsiders in the semi-finals, they will now be underdogs at Wembley on 1 June. They have got there against the odds – financial and footballing – but with an ethos that makes them look an outlier in the 21st century. This was a triumph for the people’s club against the Qatari project as well as yet another missed opportunity for Paris Saint-Germain, who find new ways to not win the Champions League.

PSG 0-1 Borussia Dortmund (0-2 agg): Mats Hummels scored the only goal of the match as Dortmund’s defensive effort takes them to Wembley

Man of the match Mats Hummels, speaking to DAZN: “I’ve scored far too few Champions League goals in my career, just five. Now is a good time to add to that number.

“Since the second match of the group stage, we’ve believed that we can prevail in every game - and I don’t see why we shouldn’t win at Wembley now.

“We remained active today and were able to take so much pace out of the game and atmosphere out of the stadium. That was our recipe for success today.”

Edin Terzić, Dortmund coach, speaking to DAZN: “Before the first game against Eindhoven, we talked for the first time about how short the journey to London could be. Back then, many were still puzzled.

“Last season, we lost the championship at home on the last matchday. I’m happy that we can now give something back to the fans.

“We’ve grown with every game and eventually realised that we could be the team that surprises everyone in the end. Now I’m very happy to be in the final with my team.”

Reaction from Dortmund’s Marco Reus who told DAZN: “Indescribable. After more than 10 years, I am in the final with Borussia again. Ousmane [Dembélé] and Achraf [Hakimi] brought a tremendous amount of pace and we suffered a lot.

“How we won the game, no one will ask tomorrow. Shots against the post won’t matter tomorrow. What counts is that Borussia Dortmund is in the final again.

“Nobody expected this. It’s just incredible.”

This won’t come as a surprise to anyone but Mats Hummels was named Player of the Match. Uefa’s Technical Observer Panel said: “Blocks, interceptions, tackles, clearance and leadership at the back - plus the goal, of course.”

Rio Ferdinand reacts to Dortmund’s victory: “This is unusual for Kylian Mbappe. We are accustomed to seeing him at the biggest stage.

“All through his career he has seemed to step up, but over the two legs he has been very subdued. You have to give Dortmund massive credit. They didn’t allow Mbappe to get one v one.

“Those big players find something when they get into a space. The chance at the end, the volley, that was a chance for him to being clinical.

“But, more credit goes to the team in yellow, Dortmund. The manager Edin Terzic deserves massive credit.”

This is just the second time a team have won both legs of a Champions League semi-final tie 1-0.

The other time it was also Borussia Dortmund, against Manchester United in 1996-97.

More from Hargreaves: “Nobody fancied Dortmund in the group of death.

“They had PSG, AC Milan and Newcastle. Dortmund were the weakest team, but they got some big wins. Dortmund found a way of being there without any superstars.

“Edin Terzic has done a fantastic job in the Champions League to find solutions.”

Owen Hargreaves speaking on TNT Sports:

“The goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made big saves. Niclas Fullkrug was a great outlet for Dortmund and the whole team is a proper team - exceptional performance.

“They are 24 points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and they are getting to a Champions League final.”

Paris St-Germain have lost all six legs of their three two-legged Champions League semi-final appearances, also doing so vs Milan in 1994-95 and Manchester City in 2020-21.

In 2019-20 aka the first Covid season they beat Leipzig in a one-off semi-final in Lisbon in front of no fans.
