So many of the graduates at Saints have ended up at Anfield in recent years and today Virgil van Dijk plays in the centre of Jurgen Klopp's defence, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane also starting and Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana on the bench.
Mauricio Pellegrino – a former Liverpool player himself – will be desperate to build on last week's 3-2 win over West Brom and ride their momentum away from the drop, especially given Saints' run of five away games in their next six Premier League encounters.
However they face a Liverpool side determined to keep up their top-four push and a forward in Mohamed Salah who cannot stop scoring, with plenty of foils around him that will keep Southampton's defence occupied.

14' - Jack Stephens tries to level proceedings for Southampton but his shot from distance is poor and the ball dribbles wide of Loris Karius' far post.
The hosts have played well since going a goal down.
18' - Great save!
Oriel Romeu finds Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the box with a wonderfully-weighted pass but Loris Karius is quick off his line to smother the Saints midfielder's shot.
25' - Roberto Firmino appeals for a penalty after going down in the box under a challenge from Jack Stephens but the referee waves play on.
At first it looked a little theatrical but, upon seeing the replays, I reckon that was a penalty!
29' - James Ward-Prowse's cross is met in the box by Guido Carrillo but the Southampton new boy's header is straight at Loris Karius.
Moments later Karius produces a rather more impressive save as he tips Ward-Prowse's header over the bar after a good cross by Dusan Tadic.
32' - Gini Wijnaldum's through ball finds Sadio Mane in a superb attacking position but Cedric puts just enough pressure on the Liverpool forward and forces him into a poor shot.
37' - Joel Matip collects the first booking of the match for a foul on Dusan Tadic.
