Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Roy Hodgson previews Palace's trip to Huddersfield

"We're fully aware of the importance of the game. We need to pick up some results and some wins so I think the task for us in every game from now until the end of the season will be the same.

"We've got to make sure we're ready for the fight. Huddersfield have done that all season and we've got to match that."

West Brom boss Alan Pardew held clear-the-air talks with the club's hierarchy this week and in his pre-match press conference on Friday he revealed how those discussions went.

He said:

"I told them what I think perhaps needs to happen going forward. They listened and I'm still in a job.

"I said it was probably time I spoke to upstairs and said, 'I don't know where all this speculation is coming from, so let's clear the air'".

Stoke's Peter Crouch warms up ahead of his side's clash with Everton at the bet365 Stadium

Everton face Stoke at the bet365 Stadium this afternoon and, ahead of the game, Toffees boss Sam Allardyce has revealed that he has enlisted the help of a psychologist to boost his players' performances.

He said this week:

"We tried a number of things. I think a change of systems, a change of personnel but I think a change of mentality is the big one.

"They are getting some help with that. We have used our in-house sports psychologist who has been here for a while and slowly he has integrated himself in some of the sessions with some of the players.

"We've been using a bit more work into the mind in the analysis room about who we are, what do we want to get and what we want to achieve.

"The main thing is the focus on being mindful and visualising the performance you give at the top level, and thinking about that to put yourself in a positive frame of mind before you run out onto the field on a Saturday.

"All your preparation tactically and technically is fine but if the player spends a little bit of time thinking about his best performance and putting himself in the right frame of mind, then that best performance has a better chance of being delivered."
