Pepe has flourished only in fits and starts since arriving from Lillie for £72m last summer, with only four Premier League goals to his name.
But here he broke the deadlock with a typical finish, cutting in from the right side on to his left foot before curling a beautiful finish beyond the stretching Mat Ryan in the Brighton goal.
Arsenal’s joy didn’t last long, however, as 10 minutes later Lewis Dunk equalised with scrappy finish at the near post.
The Gunners are now facing a period of time without their first-choice goalkeeper after Bernd Leno suffered a nasty injury during the game.
