Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno berated the Brighton striker Neal Maupay as he left the field on a stretcher having suffered what appeared to be a nasty injury in a collision between the pair.

Maupay went to challenge Leno for a bouncing ball on the edge of the area. The German goalkeeper jumped to get there first, but his knee buckled underneath his weight as he landed.

Replays showed Maupay appearing to knock Leno off balance as they came together, but there seemed little malice in the challenge.

However the goalkeeper was furious, sitting up to confront the Maupay as he was eventually carried from the pitch by medical staff, pointing and shouting at the French forward.

Talking on BT Sport at half-time, Rio Ferdinand said Maupay couldn’t be blamed for what was a "freak incident".

“If I was a Brighton player, I’d want my striker going for that ball,” said Ferdinand. “It’s a contact sport and these things can happen.”

Peter Crouch disagreed, suggesting Maupay "is in the wrong" for the push, but added that it was an unusually serious injury for an innocuous moment.

Leno was replaced by Emiliano Martinez after the incident, which occurred just before half-time with the score still goalless.

Maupay went on to score the winner in a 2-1 victory when gave a huge boost to Brighton's survivial hopes.
