Ole Gunnar Solskjaer targeting trophies after being named Manchester United manager

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow live updates as Manchester United host Watford at Old Trafford in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first match as permanent manger.

Solskjaer was giving the full-time job over the international break after his impressive list of results since taking caretaker control in December.

United can regain their place in the top four at the expense of Arsenal with a win, while Watford are aiming to regain the initiative in their battle with Wolves to be the best of the rest. Follow it live:

Manuel Pellegrini is normally cool, calm and composed on the touchline but he is absolutely seething this evening.

He's stomping about like an elephant in musth, shouting in fury at his assistants and gesturing wildly at his team.

It has been rather dysfunctional for West Ham. Declan Rice concedes a free kick with a mistimed challenge.

It is another floated set piece but this one is far less threatening. Issa Diop goes down off the ball and it is adjudged that there has been a foul, anyway.

GOAL! West Ham 0-2 Everton (Bernard, 33 minutes)

It's two, and it's what West Ham deserve.

It has been largely simple football from Everton but that's all that is required against a defence and midfield this disorganised.

Seamus Coleman and Richarlison combine down the right, the Irishman storming on to a pass beyond Aaron Cresswell, who runs as if stuck in mud, unable to recover any sort of ground.

The simplest of passes across the box, the simplest of finishes for Bernard, the simplest of 2-0 leads for Everton.

Grim expressions on the faces of the West Ham fans inside the London Stadium.

It is one of the worst halves of football that I've seen from a Premier League team this season.

Kurt Zouma does well to get across and stick his right boot in the way of a down-the-line pass that threatened to curl past the Frenchman for Marko Arnautovic to get on to.

Everton are moving past West Ham at will. They are quicker, stronger, more agile, more driven, better technically, have much more energy.

Richarlison forces Lukasz Fabianski into a low save with his legs.

Marko Arnautovic is the only West Ham player who seems to be a physical match and he bursts between Kurt Zouma and Michael Keane to get to a bouncing pass over-the-top, but even his attempted chip over Jordan Pickford is insipid.

Robert Snodgrass curls a low shot past Pickford's left-hand post from distance.

That's the best West Ham have produced, and it wasn't great.

Richarlison slips as he looks to make a tackle and that makes it look worse, Paul Tierney going to his pocket for what wasn't that bad of a challenge.

Angelo Ogbonna has made several timely challenges in this first half, and another keeps it at 2-0.

The Italian is the only reason West Ham are in the game. Just about.

Javier Hernandez and Michail Antonio are sent for a pre-halftime warmup.
