Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The football festive period is in full swing, with seven games on offer today after an action-packed midweek schedule. There’s plenty to get stuck into, with the likes of Everton, Watford and Newcastle all in action, but Leicester’s trip to Liverpool stands out given their recent meetings.

Manchester United and Southampton wrap up proceedings in this afternoon’s 5.30pm kick-off. Follow all the action from today’s matches in the blog below.

Saturday’s fixtures:

  • Bournemouth 15:00 Everton
  • Chelsea 15:00 Stoke
  • Huddersfield 15:00 Burnley
  • Liverpool 15:00 Leicester
  • Newcastle 15:00 Brighton
  • Watford 15:00 Swansea
  • Manchester United 17:30 Southampton

No rest for the best

Mohamed Salah continues his run in the first team despite the pile up of festive fixtures. He was the leading goalscorer until a certain Harry Kane turned up. Salah has 15 goals and Kane's recent run of hot form takes him to 18.

Tough for Hughes

All the omens suggest it could be another defeat for Mark Hughes and Stoke.

Ticking along

Pressure on Mark Hughes is building from the stands with some sections of supporters less than impressed by their start to the season with just the five wins to show.

"We have a real sense of determination within the group, and we have seen that over the past week or two.

"We are ticking along again now, we need to get over one point a game, which is what we have always done, so to a large degree we are back on an even keel.

“We have some decent games coming up, so we feel we will be more than OK in the New Year.”

Stoke City Manager Mark Hughes

350 miles

Brighton's trip to Newcastle is the longest journey in the Premier League this afternoon. Both sides have just the one win in their last five games but neither club are in the relegation zone.

Chelsea vs Stoke

Chelsea force an early corner which is flicked on by Marcos Alonso and Stoke clear. The hosts are not holding back in the opening exchanges.

Liverpool 0-1 Leicester

What a start for the visitors. Demari Gray wins the ball back and finds Riyad Mahrez who pulls unselfishly the ball back to Jamie Vardy who opens the scoring.

Goal!

Chelsea 1-0 Stoke

It's certainly a lively start to the Premier League this afternoon. Willian crosses a free-kick into the box and Antonio Rüdiger rises highest in the box to put Chelsea ahead.

Liverpool were once again the architects of their own downfall by giving the ball away in their own half. Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool's £75m signing, is in the stands today. Would he have stopped that from happening?

6: Liverpool keep possession and play around 20 passes between the Leicester City lines. Sadio Mane finds Mohamed Salah and on his left foot he shoots wide when you might have expected him to score.
