Burnley hold on for goalless draw on an emotional day in Leicester
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Leicester City shared a 0-0 draw with Burnley at the King Power stadium on Saturday when football was again overshadowed by emotional tributes to the club’s late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.
Thousands of supporters walked to the stadium from the city centre before the Premier League game, which was preceded by two minutes’ silence for the Thai billionaire. Vichai died in a helicopter crash after City’s last home match two weeks ago.
With Vichai’s family in attendance, Leicester’s players, who made a 19,000-km round trip to Thailand for the funeral in midweek, wore special commemorative shirts, while almost every fan sported one of the specially distributed scarves bearing the words “Forever In Our Hearts”.
The football was always going to be of secondary importance in such emotionally charged circumstances and Leicester, without this season’s ever-presents Harry Maguire and James Maddison through injury, struggled to keep their focus.
Jamie Vardy, who has not scored in five league games, went closest in the first half with a shot that was cleared off the line by Matt Lowton as Burnley battled to avoid a fourth successive league defeat.
The game opened up after the break, when Burnley’s Chris Wood sliced over and Ricardo Pereira headed wide for mid-table Leicester, who failed to score in a league game for the first time this season.
Three former Leicester managers -- Nigel Pearson, Claudio Ranieri and Craig Shakespeare -- all watched from the sidelines.
Afterwards, Vichai’s son and City’s vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha took a Thai flag to the centre circle with the crowd chanting “Leicester, Leicester, Leicester”.
With tears in his eyes, the vice-chairman led the players and staff around the pitch as his father’s name rang round the ground.
Special 100-year Remembrance Day displays are going on at all four grounds before kick-off in just under five minutes time.
There's also a tribute to Vichai Srivaddhanprabha, who lost his life a fortnight ago, and Claudio Ranieri is in attendance at the King Power.
Let's see what's in store for us today.
We're underway in all four Premier League 3pm games.
It's an emotional afternoon for all involved, so let's see what they can inspire.
4 min: Huddersfield 0-0 West Ham
Huddersfield nearly continue from where they left off on Monday against Fulham. Steve Mounie rises highest before Lukasz Fabianski makes a great save, before Lossl makes a fantastic save to prevent West Ham from opening the scoring.
6 min: Southampton 0-0 Watford
Watford very nearly take the lead much to the dismay of the home supporters. Gerard Deulofeu manages to get a shot away and the keeper McCarthy does well to divert the ball away.
GOAL! Huddersfield 1-0 West Ham (Pritchard 6')
They do continue from where they left off! Alex Pritchard manages to squeeze a shot from the edge of the box past Lukasz Fabianski, with the Pole out of position as West Ham try to clear.
GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Bournemouth (Rondon 7')
The Venezuelan puts Newcastle ahead with his first Premier League goal for the Magpies. DeAndre Yedlin whips in a brilliant ball from the right and Rondon finishes at the second time of asking.
9 min: Leicester 0-0 Burnley
No serious chances for either side here. The weather seems to be reflecting the somber mood at the King Power Stadium this afternoon, and that seems to have hindered either side from starting well so far.
Leicester do have an appeal for a penalty turned dowm though after Charlie Taylor blocks a cross from the right
14 min: Southampton 0-0 Watford
There are little holes appearing in the defences of both sides but so far there hasn't been the necessary quality to take advantage of them.
This is the case for Chris Armstrong. who gets his cut-back wrong after good work from Manolo Gabbiadini.
15 min: Huddersfield 1-0 West Ham
A big let-off for West Ham. A cross from Philip Billing on the right loops over Lukasz Fabianski to hit the inside of the far post, before trickling all the way to graze the other post.
