Chelsea: A look back at 2018

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

N'Golo Kante earned Chelsea a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace to boost the Blues' bid for a place in the Premier League's top four.

Kante, a World Cup winner with France last summer, has been deployed in a more advanced position on the right side of midfield by Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea.

He netted his third Premier League goal of the season at Selhurst Park as Chelsea ended Palace's three-match unbeaten run to move five points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal in the battle for Champions League qualification.

Willian and Ross Barkley had hit posts in quick succession in the first half and the hosts' performance showed little of the style and substance which had earned victory at Manchester City eight days earlier. Re-live the action below:

Southampton 1-3 Manchester City

Fernandinho, perhaps for his own protection, is replaced by Kyle Walker.

Burnley 2-0 West Ham

90 minutes

Tom Heaton, starting ahead of Joe Hart today, has made a great save to preserve Burnley's clean sheet. West Ham have thrown players forward late on but to no avail.

Southampton 1-3 Manchester City

90+1 minutes

Long should score a consolation. Ward-Prowse puts in an excellent delivery and the forward gets his head on it. But it flies wide. At that, St Mary's begins to empty.

Full time: It's finished at Turf Moor, where Burnley secure a vital three points. They move level on points with Southampton. That win, after some heavy defeats in recent weeks, will be a welcome confidence boost.

Full time: It's over at St Mary's too. City end their run of defeats with a comfortable win and go into their game with Liverpool next week seven points behind the league leaders.

City did the hard work in the first half. They just about weathered the Southampton storm following Højbjerg's equaliser and scored twice late in the half. After that, the second half was effectively a non-event. A big win for City, who couldn't afford another slip up.

For Southampton, it's two defeats in a row. Hasenhuttl has improved things, but there is still a lot of work to be done.
