From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Ross Barkley scored a late equaliser as Chelsea drew 2-2 with Manchester United - leading to a touchline altercation which saw Jose Mourinho dragged away from a flare-up in the mouth of the Stamford Bridge tunnel.

The former Blues boss has not won at his former ground since taking over at United and he was involved after the home bench erupted in celebrations at the late leveller.

The visitors had looked on course for a rare Premier League win in west London as an Anthony Martial brace cancelled out Antonio Rudiger's opener.

However, Barkley slammed in the last meaningful kick of the contest to secure a point, with all eyes then drawn to a spat between Mourinho and Chelsea's second assistant coach Marco Ianni.

Mourinho shook hands with Blues boss Maurizio Sarri at the final whistle but was jeered by the home supporters and responded by holding up three fingers to them at full-time, representing the trio of league titles he won as manager of the club.

It’s a big game for…

Ashley Young: He delivered the cross for Alexis Sanchez’s winning goal against Newcastle but it is in the other direction that the England international will have to demonstrate some improvement. With Eden Hazard his likely direct opponent, the 33-year-old will have his work cut out but he must offer more protection to the centre backs and David de Gea than he did against the Magpies.

Best stat…

18: Manchester United have lost 18 Premier League encounters against Chelsea, more than against any other side. In fact, the Red Devils have failed to win at Stamford Bridge in all competitions since October 2012.

Player to watch…

Jorginho: While Eden Hazard continues to drive Chelsea attacking play, it is the Italian who remains the fulcrum to Maurizio Sarri’s style of play. Ander Herrera has been utilised in recent years to track Belgian Hazard’s every movement, but Jorginho, who has made the most successful passes in the league this season, has the ability to dictate the tempo of the game and that will give Jose Mourinho further headaches in his attempts to stop Chelsea in their tracks.

Past three meetings…

Chelsea 1 (Hazard pen) Manchester United 0, FA Cup, May 2018

Manchester United 2 (Lukaku, Lingard) Chelsea 1 (Willian), Premier League, February 2018

Chelsea 1 (Morata) Manchester United 0, Premier League, November 2017

GOAL! Chelsea 2-2 Manchester United (Ross Barkley, 90 + 6 minutes)

Chelsea preserve their unbeaten run with the latest of equalisers!

Azpilicueta lifts to the far post and David Luiz's fantastic header cannons off the woodwork.

Antonio Rudiger looks set to put in the rebound but David De Gea heroically saves.

That leaves him prone as Barkley turns in the ricochet to surely secure a 2-2 draw.

Hold on, it has all kicked off on the touchline...

A scuffle on the touchline as Jose Mourinho has to be restrained after taking offence with a muttering or the action of one of the Chelsea support staff.

The players take their cue from their staff and have their own brief kerfuffle in the centre circle but the game can soon resume.

The full-time whistle is finally blown and Chelsea have snatched a point!

Harry Latham-Coyle20 October 2018 14:29

My word!

Jose Mourinho holds up three fingers to the vocal Chelsea crowd. He looks absolutely furious...

A brilliant fightback again from his side, but Ross Barkley popped up deep into additional time to find a leveller for Chelsea and preserve their Premier League unbeaten record.
