Premier League weekend round-up

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Arsenal stumbled in their attempts to keep the pressure on in the race for the top four as they dropped points at Brighton.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring but Jurgen Locadia's equaliser saw the points shared at the Amex.

Here's how it played out:

And we're underway!

Nathan Jacobs26 December 2018 17:16

3 mins: Sloppy start from Xhaka and Brighton have had a positive start.

4 mins: WHAT A SAVE MATTHEW RYAN!

As I say this, Arsenal create a great chance courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Matteo Guendouzi.

The midfielder sends a great ball over the top which the Gabon international sends towards goal and the backtracking Mat Ryan gets a crucial fingertip to get it over the bar.

6 mins: GOAL! Brighton 0-1 Arsenal (Aubameyang, 6)

The good early save comes to nothing because of slack Brighton defending. They fail to clear and mess around on the edge of the box.

Lacazette must be given some thanks for the goal though because his good footwork on the edge of the box finally finds Aubameyang who gets himself some space on the left-hand side of the box and curls a beauty past Ryan.

16 mins: Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

Brighton have honestly not been in Arsenal's half...at least it doesn't feel that way.

Arsenal are in absolute cruise control at the moment, to such an extent I forgot to give you an update.

They haven't done much themselves since they scored, mind you.

17 mins: Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

As I say this...

Arsenal pass the ball joyfully down the right hand side and some intricate football leads to Liechsteiner bearing down on the box but his toe-poked cross finds the grateful hands of Ryan.

22 mins: Brighton 0-1 Arsenal

Brighton finally threaten and it's Solly March with the shot which is deflected for a corner.

Nothing comes of it and Leno punches it away.

Could have done with doing that at Southampton...

25 mins: Brighton goal disallowed!

And rightfully so, to be honest.

Leno claims the loose ball but Murray still gives the ball a kick and eventually he does manage to get it out of Leno's hands.

He scrambles the ball just over the line but a foul has been given by Anthony Taylor and rightfully so.
