Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Arsenal will be looking to record their first points of the new season when they face Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners have endured a miserable start to the season which has seen them lose to champions Manchester City and FA Cup holders Chelsea in successive weeks.

However, Unai Emery will be confident of picking up his first point as his side faces only one of three sides that have fared worse than the Gunners this season.

The Hammers were thoroughly dismantled 4-0 by Liverpool on the opening weekend before they imploded at home to Bournemouth to lose 2-1.

Both teams are still adapting to new styles of play and incorporating their summer additions into their starting XIs, with Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi and West Ham’s Felipe Anderson among the best performers for either side so far.

It’s a big game for…

Unai Emery: The Basque has received notable support this week from Ray Parlour and Gary Neville regarding his man-management and tactical nous, however his methods must soon start to bear fruit and his side must shows more defensive resilience than was on display at Stamford Bridge. His side may not get a better chance to do so than against a faltering Hammers outfit.

Stat…

139: Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi has had the most touches of any Arsenal player this season, which after 180 minutes stands at 139.

Remember when…

Unai Emery will hope to avoid a third consecutive defeat in the league, but the Hammers did inflict a third defeat in a row on the Gunners in April 2007 thanks to this lob over Jens Lehmann from Bobby Zamora at Emirates Stadium. The loss left Arsenal just two points ahead of Bolton Wanderers in the race for the final Champions League place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npWlimLX_z8

Player to watch…

Matteo Guendouzi : The 19-year-old has been the standout player in the new season and has made a combined 17 tackles and interceptions for the Gunners this term, more than any other midfielder in the league. With a 100% pass success rate in the first half against Chelsea, including a defence-splitting pass to Hector Bellerin, the former Lorient man will look to continue being the side’s metronome in midfield.

Past three-meetings…

Arsenal 4 (Monreal, Ramsey, Lacazette x2) West Ham 1 (Arnautovic), Premier League, April 2018

Arsenal 1 (Welbeck) West Ham 0, League Cup, December 2017

West Ham 0 Arsenal 0, Premier League, December 2017

(Odds provided by 888 Sport)

13 min: Huddersfield 0-0 Cardiff

Ben Hamer doesn't last much longer than Mendez-Laing, as the keeper is now replaced by Jonas Lossl in the Huddersfield goal.

16 min: Bournemouth 0-0 Everton

Huge chance for Callum Wilson! The 26-year-old has two in the opening two matches of the league season, but he balloons his effort over the bar from 12 yards with not a defender in sight.

16 min: Southampton 0-0 Leicester

The Saints are still on top at St Mary's, but they have yet to fathom anything clear-cut. Shane Long has had a half chance but was edged out of it by the tall frame of Harry Maguire.

21 min: Bournemouth 0-0 Everton

It's all getting a bit feisty at the Vitality. Ryan Fraser and Josh King have both picked up knocks, and Mason Holgate has also been involved in a collision with the latter.

GOALArsenal 0-1 West Ham (Arnautovic 25)

The Austrian leaves the Arsenal defence shcoked, hitting the ball through the legs of Sokratis and it makes its way past Petr Cech after nice interplay with Felipe Anderson.

All to do for the Gunners!

GOAL Arsenal 1-1 West Ham (Monreal 30)

What a response from Emery's side and it is his fellow Spaniard who has levelled things up on the half-hour mark.

The left-back smashes home from six yards after former keeper Fabianski can only parry Hector Bellerin's cross to the former Malaga defender.

31 mins: Bournemouth 0-0 Everton

No chances yet for the visitors, but their players on the flanks are getting into excellent positions. Walcott and Coleman excellent in particular

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 15:35

31 mins: Southampton 0-0 Leicester

All of the action at St Mary's seems to be centering around Jannik Vestergaard. The former Werder Bremen defender heads wide from a corner.

The Saints keep on pushing.......

One for the Hammers fans!

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 15:40

40 min: Bournemouth 0-0 Everton

He may have scored three goals in two games, but Brazilian Richarlison has been sent off after headbutting Adam Smith.

No hesitation from Lee Probert!
