Elsewhere, Erik ten Hag has kept his job at Manchester United but must now show dramatic improvement on their eighth-place finish and they kick off the new campaign on Friday 16 August by welcoming Fulham to Old Trafford, while Arne Slot begins the daunting task of following Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool by travelling to newly-promoted Ipswich.
Maresca’s departure for Chelsea has left Leicester searching for a replacement after winning promotion and they begin their Premier League adventure by facing Tottenham on Monday evening, 19 August.

Manchester City not lowering price for Joao Cancelo
Manchester City will not drop the asking price for Joao Cancelo any lower than £25million, according to The Sun. Barcelona are keen on a permanent move for the 30-year-old Portugal defender after a loan spell.
Manchester United have reportedly threatened to walk away from their pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite over Everton’s asking price.

Enzo Maresca calls coaching Chelsea ‘a dream’ after joining on five-year deal
Enzo Maresca said it was “a dream” to have been appointed Chelsea head coach after he was given a five-year contract to succeed Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge.
Describing his excitement at being handed the task of steering the next phase in owners Clearlake Capital’s rebuild of the club, he pointed to the “talented group of players and staff” that he will lead when he officially becomes the third permanent managerial appointment of the Todd Boehly era on July 1.
It is the 44-year-old’s first job in charge of a senior top-flight side and comes after he masterminded Leicester’s return to the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola unsure of Manchester City’s plans in summer transfer window
Pep Guardiola admitted to being in the dark over Manchester City’s summer transfer plans following their FA Cup final loss to Manchester United.
Saturday’s defeat at Wembley meant City fell short of becoming the first team in English football history to win back to back league and cup doubles.
Having been pushed to the final day of the Premier League season by Arsenal and fallen at the quarter-final stage in the Champions League to Real Madrid, the manager was asked whether, after missing out on retaining two of the three trophies they won in their historic treble season a year ago, there would need to be changes in the squad.
Manchester United’s weak vote of confidence leaves Erik ten Hag managing under a microscope
Erik ten Hag was sat in the same seat he had been 15 months earlier when, at the peak of his powers and his popularity, he declared: “I love this club.” Some 15 months later, he struck a defiant tone. “If they don’t want me any more then I go somewhere else to win trophies because that is what I did my whole career,” he said.
He was in the depths of Wembley, having added the 2024 FA Cup to the 2023 Carabao Cup. His first piece of silverware came when Manchester United had just beaten Barcelona, when they seemed to be surging into title contention. His second came after the combination of their lowest ever Premier League finish and their poorest ever Champions League campaign.
United decided they did want Ten Hag. Sort of. And eventually, after two-and-a-half weeks in limbo, he was confirmed as their manager for next season; potentially longer, given they are discussing a new contract. And yet if there is a logic to making an end-of-season review under new owners as thorough as possible, if United were eager to avoid knee-jerk reactions, the process has scarcely been a vote of confidence in Ten Hag.
The club have chosen to stick with the Dutch coach for now following his surprise FA Cup triumph, but their extensive search for a replacement hardly offers a ringing endorsement

Erik ten Hag wants Man Utd to take ‘step’ in pre-season after remaining as boss
Erik Ten Hag wants Manchester United to take the ‘next step’ on their pre-season tour after learning he will remain at the Old Trafford helm.
Ten Hag’s position had been under threat after a disappointing Premier League campaign in which his side finished eighth.
However, the 2023-24 season ended on a high with victory over rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final and, following a performance review, it is understood the club have decided to retain the Dutchman.
The 54-year-old’s next task will be to prepare for the club’s summer friendly fixtures, the first of which is against Rosenborg in Norway on July 15.

Footballers’ unions take legal action against FIFA over ‘unworkable’ calendar
Footballers’ unions have followed through on a threat to take legal action against FIFA over the sport’s “unworkable” calendar.
Europe’s highest court will be asked to rule whether the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights – including Article 5 which prohibits slavery and forced labour – has been breached by football’s global governing body in its decision to introduce a 32-team Club World Cup.
Maheta Molango, the chief executive of the English players’ union, the Professional Footballers’ Association, insists football cannot be “exempt” from rules around workers’ rights.
