We know Newcastle like to delay, have shown we can beat them - Ten Hag

Joe Willock and Callum Wilson combined to head Newcastle firmly into the race for Champions League qualification as they leapfrogged Manchester United into third place.

Willock’s 65th-minute header, his third goal of the season, and a second from substitute Wilson two minutes from time inflicted just a second defeat in 17 games in all competitions on Erik ten Hag’s side and gained a measure of revenge for February’s Carabao Cup final heartache at Wembley.

It was a deserved 2-0 victory too for the Magpies, who created the better chances in the game and might have gone ahead through Alexander Isak, Sean Longstaff and Willock before they broke the deadlock in front of a crowd of 52,268.

They are now level on 50 points - one more than they collected during the whole of the last campaign - with United, but have a significantly better goal difference with both having 11 games to play.

Newcastle United strengthened their top-four hopes and leapfrogged Manchester United into third in the Premier League table as Joe Willock and Callum Wilson sealed an important win at St James’ Park.

Newcastle flew out of the traps in the first half and created several clear chances to take the lead. David de Gea was forced into a double save to deny Alexander Isak and Willock, who then wasted an even better opportunity from Allan Saint-Maximin’s pull-back.

But the midfielder took his chance after the break as Newcastle continued to play on the front foot and were rewarded with a deserved breakthrough. Saint-Maximin nodded down to Willock, who headed Newcaste into the lead.

Substitute Wilson came off the bench to double Newcastle’s lead with a glancing header from Kieran Trippier’s free kick, as the hosts claimed a memorable win. Here are how the players rated.

Second-half goals from Willock and Wilson ensure a massive win for Newcastle as they move above United and into third place with that 2-0 win. They dominated the first half and continued that momentum into the second period before adding the vital goals. Guimaraes' cross was headed back across the box by Saint-Maximin with Willock on hand to nod in from close range before Wilson headed home from Trippier's free-kick late on to secure all three points. It's revenge for Howe's men after their defeat in the EFL Cup final but a woeful performance from the Red Devils who continue their awful run away from home against the best sides in the league.
