Luton created better opportunities before the break and created an xG (expected goals) of 1.27 compared to Newcastle's 0.99. Barkley had their most touches (47) and completed 88.2 per cent of his passes in an impressive midfield display. However, the Hatters must be more careful in the defensive third, as they have often gifted the ball to the Magpies, who haven't been able to capitalise. As for the hosts, they will be disappointed with their lack of control at home. Howe's men have had just 48.7 per cent of the possession, with most of their best opportunities coming from counters.

Luton twice came from behind against Newcastle to send the teams into the break level at St. James' Park with the score 2-2. Longstaff netted the opener for the hosts inside seven minutes, getting onto the end of Trippier's low cross to power his low, first-time strike into the bottom-left corner. Osho then replied with a header from close range before the Magpies regained the lead moments later. Gordon made a surging run down the left before cutting into the box and unleashing a curling effort. Kaminski pushed it away, but Longstaff was there to score the rebound for his second goal of the contest. However, Barkey ensured that an entertaining first 45 minutes ended level. He dispossessed Longstaff and rolled a pass down the left side of the box to Doughty, who had his low strike saved. The ball dropped straight to the feet of Barkley, with the midfielder taking a touch to compose himself before thumping in the equaliser.
