Danny Welbeck's first-half goal against the run of play gave Brighton & Hove Albion a 1-0 win at Newcastle United, with the home side's lack of sharpness in front of goal extending their winless streak to four Premier League games.

With striker Alexander Isak back after a period out with a toe injury, Newcastle dominated the opening exchanges but struggled to convert their plentiful possession into shots on target, and Welbeck showed them how it should be done in the 35th minute, muscling into the box to slip the ball past Nick Pope and give Brighton the lead.

Newcastle's accuracy improved in the second half but the shots they managed on target lacked power and precision, while Brighton looked dangerous every time they crossed the halfway line.

Dan Burn finally got the ball into the Brighton net in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time but he was well offside and the goal was chalked off as the Seagulls hung on for a win that moves them up to fifth in the table on 15 points, while Newcastle remain eighth on 12.

Newcastle United vs Brighton & Hove Albion

100 minutes of football has come to an end at St. James’ Park and Newcastle have been beaten 1-0 by Brighton after being the better side for all but one of those minutes. Right from kick-off, the home team put a lot of pressure on Brighton, spending most of their time in and around the opposition box. They couldn’t find the opener, and in the 35th minute, Brighton broke out well with Welbeck, who played a quick one-two with Rutter before finishing past Pope into the right corner. That gave Brighton the lead at the break, and the second half began with more Newcastle pressure. It was a game of missed chances for Newcastle, with players such as Isak, Gordon, and Barnes squandering opportunities to bring the game level. Welbeck suffered a bad back injury, which added nine minutes on at the end of the game, but Newcastle couldn’t take advantage and the game ended with Brighton taking all three points back to the South Coast. Newcastle’s dominance can be seen through their xG figure of 1.95 at full-time. Brighton managed to drum up 1.16 xg of their own, but that statistic doesn’t show the level of dominance that they suffered. Hurzeler will be gleaming with that victory, which leaves his side in fifth position as things stand. Thank you for joining this live text commentary, goodbye!
