Manchester City were dealt another early blow to their Premier League title hopes as Newcastle secured an impressive home point at St James’ Park.

In the absence of influential midfielder Rodri, out for the season after suffering a serious knee injury against Arsenal, Pep Guardiola’s side lacked their usual calm, composure and creativity. Having taken the lead through Josko Gvardiol ten minutes before half time, the visitors struggled to create consistent chances.

Anthony Gordon equalised from the penalty spot after the forward, playing centrally with Alexander Isak injured, was felled by Ederson having burst beyond the Manchester City defence. Neither side could force a winner late on, with Nick Pope making a fine save from Bernardo Silva to secure a draw. A point apiece suits the hosts rather better than the champions, with Liverpool able to usurp Manchester City at the top of the table with victory at Wolves later.

Newcastle will be disappointed with the scoreline considering their performance so far. The home side have been promising for large periods.

They’re still sweeping forward at every opportunity, but it’s just not clicking so fa, as Trippier’s cross falls to nobody.

GOAL! Newcastle 0-1 Manchester City

GOAL! And City are ahead from nowhere!

Grealish skips past a challenge on the touchline and feeds it to Gvardiol, who’s made the overlapping run into the box. He dummies, cuts inside and moves it to his right foot, and fires low into the far corner!

Newcastle seem to have sensed an opportunity here, as they’re applying plenty of pressure even when City have the ball in their defensive areas. They’ve won it back in promising areas a few times so far, but haven’t been able to fully capitalise.

Another Newcastle booking as Guimaraes slides in late on Gundogan.

City have definitely settled in the last 10 minutes or so, and they’re starting to enjoy more sustained possession.

The away side win a free-kick around halfway into the Newcastle half. It’staken short, but the chance goes begging as Gundogan’s cross is wild.

Great play from both sides. Haaland shrugs off Burn on halfway to create the opening, and City sweep forward. Silva plays an inviting diagonal ball to the near post, where Haaland is waiting, but Trippier does brilliantly to follow the striker’s run and nip in to clear for a corner.

A promising move from City as Lewis brings the ball down on the edge of the area and lays it off to Haaland. The Norwegian sweeps it to Silva, who tries the cutback to Gundogan, but the pass was behind the German and he scuffs his effort.

Hall delivers a Newcastle corner and Haaland gets his head to it, but he can only flick it backwards and it bounces off Grealish for another corner. The next corner is a good one too, and Schar heads it back across goal, but the away side clear.

We have the first booking of the day too, as Schar scythes down Grealish on the counter.

Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park

“Manchester City are facing what, after last week, may become a familiar test, of whether they can break down a packed defence without Rodri’s ability to pass the ball forwards. Some of their distribution has been ponderous and while Newcastle haven’t copied all of Arsenal’s second-half gameplan, there are times when they have plenty of players behind the ball.”

Both sides have lacked the necessary quality in the final third so far, but it’s certainly been Newcastle who’ve had the better of the attacking play.
