Newcastle United played host to Arsenal in Saturday’s early Premier League kick off and produced a stellar defensive showing to build some momentum from their midweek Carabao Cup win over Chelsea and propel themselves up the table.

Eddie Howe’s side triumphed by a single goal to nil, with a vibrant start rewarded with a fantastic Alexander Isak header just 12 minutes in following a terrific Anthony Gordon cross. Thereafter it was a case of concentration and work rate, with Howe having called for a return to last year’s resolve and resilience - and he certainly got it to shut Arsenal out.

The Gunners were desperately disappointing, with no fluidity to their attacking play and even their set-pieces below par in what was a dismal afternoon for Mikel Arteta’s outfit - who could be eight points off the top of the table by the end of the weekend. Gabriel gives it away in a dangerous position but he gets away with it as Guimaraes can’t hook the return pass to the overlapping Isak.

Arsenal clear and Longstaff hauls down Trossard. Schar is booked for kicking the ball away – no doubt an Arsenal fan somewhere will make a social media post about that.

Livramento has dominated the battle with Martinelli so far down the Arsenal left (though mostly in defence, not attack). The full-back wins the second goal kick in as many minutes from the Brazilian.

Back underway now and Guimaraes is okay to carry on. The away side mount an attack but Trossard’s ball is overhit despite Saka’s intelligent run.

A lull in activity here after a couple of fouls and some stern words from the referee to Gabriel Martinelli.

Guitarreas has stayed down for now.

Martinelli does well to win a corner despite being isolated, and the Gunners will have another chance to produce a dangerous set-piece.

Poor again though, and it goes straight out for a goal kick.

It’s been a frantic game so far, especially when the home side attack, as they are looking to get forward quickly – in stark contrast to Arsenal’s more patient build-up. Nevertheless, it’s forcing Arsenal to try and take more initiative when it does break for them.

Richard Jolly at St. James’ Park:

Anthony Gordon is normally more effective operating on the left than the right but that was a superb first-time cross, and a reason to use an out-and-out winger, rather than an inverted one. Isak had been short of goals this season but now has three in three games. And Arsenal, previously the kings of clean sheets, have conceded again.

Hall delivers a free-kick from deep and it falls to Willock, who produces a good cross, but it’s headed away.

CLOSE!

Rice’s corner is better this time. It flies towards the back post and is headed back across goal by Saliba, with Hall doing well to block the rebound from Martinelli to prevent what would have likely been a goal.

Brilliant play from Saka as he stands up his man and fizzes a low cross into the corridor between Pope and his defenders, and Schar does well to avoid the own goal as he puts it behind for a corner.

Rice swings in the set-piece but again it doesn’t beat the first man. Newcastle recycle possession and Willock plays a lovely ball over the top to Gordon, who takes on Timber and manages to win a corner as his deflected shot flashes across the goal and goes out.
