Gary Lineker shocks Euros viewers with crude Ronaldo joke

Netherlands beat Turkey in a thrilling quarter-final at Euro 2024 on Saturday, setting up a semi-final with England next week.

Underdogs Turkey always looked dangerous on the break, but they took the lead through a set piece, with Samet Akaydin netting a header in the first half.

The Dutch looked in danger, but Ronald Koeman’s side hit back with 20 minutes left in normal time, as Stefan de Vrij scored his own header to draw his nation level. And then six minutes later, Cody Gakpo forced an own goal from Mert Muldur, catching the Turkish defender out with a back-post run.

That strike proved the difference in Berlin, as Netherlands booked their spot in the final four, where England await on Wednesday.

Re-live all action and follow the post-game fallout below, as Netherlands beat Turkey at Euro 2024.

Netherlands’ suspended players for England semi-final

Netherlands have NO suspended players for their semi-final with England, who will also be at full strength.

That is, of course, barring any injuries over the next four days.

So, the Dutch will have the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay available.

But Marc Guehi will be back for England, having served a suspension in the quarter-finals, and Luke Shaw was finally fit enough to feature as the Three Lions advanced on Saturday.

The match finished 1-1 at full-time after Breel Embolo’s second-half goal was soon matched by Bukayo Saka’s trademark finish, and it stayed that way through extra time. But England put together a perfect penalty shootout, scoring all five of their kicks to progress to the semi-finals.

Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Ivan Toney scored before Trent Alexander-Arnold converted the winning kick, after Pickford had saved Switzerland’s first penalty from Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji.

‘Pressure is for tyres!’ Alan Shearer and ex-England players hail penalty heroes after Euro 2024 quarter-final victory

England’s former players hailed the courage and execution of the current generation after Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squeezed past Switzerland on penalties at Euro 2024.

The match finished 1-1 at full-time after Breel Embolo’s second-half goal was soon matched by Bukayo Saka’s trademark finish, and it stayed that way through extra time. But England put together a perfect penalty shootout, scoring all five of their kicks to progress to the semi-finals.

England and manager Southgate have come in for stinging criticism during the tournament after several underwhelming displays, with Gary Lineker describing the 1-1 draw with Denmark as “s***” on his podcast. But an improved showing against Switzerland, followed by five precise penalties, brought out high praise.

“Pressure is for tyres!” bellowed Alan Shearer on co-commentary after Alexander-Arnold buried his penalty.

Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand explain ‘the difference’ behind England’s Euro 2024 improvement

Gareth Southgate was lauded by BBC pundits for changing England’s formation and getting the best out of Phil Foden during their Euro 2024 quarter-final with Switzerland.

Southgate decided to deploy wing-backs for the first time in two years in an effort to match up Switzerland’s 3-4-3 system, and the decision proved fruitful as England smothered their opponents’ build-up from the back and forced some sloppy mistakes.

Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden played in central No 10 roles behind Harry Kane and Foden in particular was influential in England’s best attacking moments of a first half which ended 0-0.

England’s route to the final: Possible opponents in the Euro 2024 knockout stages

England made it difficult again, but Gareth Southgate’s side are through to the semi-finals of Euro 2024 after a penalty-shootout victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals.

After England barely navigated their last-16 tie with Slovakia, requiring an added-time overhead kick from Jude Bellingham and extra-time goal from Harry Kane, attention turned to Switzerland on Saturday (6 July).

And the Three Lions fell behind in Dusseldorf, just as they did in their previous knockout game.

But England again showed great character to fight back, as Bukayo Saka picked out the bottom corner with a sumptuous strike from the edge of the box.

Penalties ensued, with England faultless from the spot as they claimed victory. Bellingham, Saka, Cole Palmer, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold all scored to book a semi-final spot – while Jordan Pickford provided a crucial save.

Next up? The semi-finals. But against whom? And who awaits if England reach the final?

England’s quarter-final reaction gives Gareth Southgate an exciting answer for the future

Another game for England without entertaining the masses, but another step closer to the Euro 2024 final - and perhaps another hint as to where the future lies, whether that comes during this tournament or not.

Not from another one-paced, uninventive display. Not with the supposed tactical shift either, which did little to change the speed of England’s play or the way they constantly checked inside to play safe and create too little. But if the original 90 minutes didn’t contain sufficient drama, their second late equaliser in as many matches and a subsequent penalty shootout victory perhaps offered just enough.

Instead, the big positives for England to take might be from what they didn’t do to start with: the changes made, the introductions of personnel and pace, the ability they clearly possess to alter their approach in important stages of games.

Two fixtures in a row now Gareth Southgate’s substitutes have seen the match swing in England’s favour - though both times they could surely have come earlier, both times they were clearly required before the Three Lions started to panic and the clock began to run down.

Even so, answers have emerged which may give a continued route through this tournament as an in-game switch, before becoming more permanent options in future.

England v Switzerland player ratings as Bukayo Saka shines in dramatic Euro 2024 quarter-final

England beat Switzerland on penalties in the third quarter-final at Euro 2024, in a nail-biting encounter in Dusseldorf.

The first half showed flashes of improvement from a slightly altered Three Lions line-up, and Gareth Southgate’s side dominated, but they were too often pedestrian as Switzerland looked comfortable in defence.

The second half started in the same way, but the Swiss turned the tables with a spell of dominance that later provoked a surprise goal, with Breel Embolo giving them the lead on the 75th minute.

England looked wary and worried, and the subs came on, but Bukayo Saka rifled in an effort from outside the box to take it to extra time.

That was an equally torrid affair for the England faithful, with Switzerland looking the more likely to get the winner, but the 30 minutes passed and England were heading to penalties once again.

A realm that’s carried plenty of heartbreak for england, but not this time; all five England players scored their efforts, so all it needed was a save from Jordan Pickford to send the Three Lions into the semi-finals.

But how did each player perform? Here are The Independent’s player ratings:
