Your support makes all the difference.England boss Sarina Wiegman’s return to the Netherlands ended in defeat as Dutch substitute Renate Jansen’s superb late strike saw the Lionesses beaten 2-1 in their second Nations League group game.
Jansen rifled past Mary Earps in the 90th minute in Utrecht after Lieke Martens’ contentious first-half opener, which would likely have been ruled out had VAR been in operation, was cancelled out by Alessia Russo’s 64th-minute finish.
Both teams hit the woodwork late in the first half, Rachel Daly for the visitors and Linda Beerensteyn for the hosts.
Netherlands goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar then made an excellent save to deny Lauren Hemp before Russo brought things level, but it was Jansen who had the final say on what proved a disappointing occasion for Wiegman in the battle between her current and former employers, both of whom she has guided to Euros glory and a World Cup final.
The result - only a third loss for England under Wiegman - leaves both the Lionesses and Andries Jonker’s Netherlands on three points in Group A1. Follow all the reaction from Netherlands vs England below and get the latest football odds and tips here.
Netherlands vs England - latest updates
England boss Sarina Wiegman admits it will be “very special” when her side take on her native Netherlands in Tuesday’s Nations League contest in Utrecht.
Wiegman played for the Dutch national team before overseeing their Euro 2017 win on home soil and finishing as runners-up at the 2019 World Cup in France.
The 53-year-old, who has subsequently matched those managerial achievements with England, told a press conference that being back in her home country with the Lionesses was “very nice, a little bit strange too – of course I have some memories here”.
She added: “I’m really looking forward to tomorrow. It’s just very special to be here and to play the opponents.
“Of course we know each other really well, I know the staff, most of the staff didn’t change that much, or the players. Lots of people will be in the stands that I know.”

Is England vs Netherlands on TV? Kick-off time, channel and how to watch
England face the Netherlands in their second match of the Women’s Nations League campaign tonight in Utrecht.
The Lionesses began their participation in the inaugural competition with a 2-1 win against Scotland last Friday. The Netherlands found themselves on the wrong side of the same scoreline against Belgium, also last Friday, and will be looking to make a response.
The last time England faced head coach Sarina Wiegman’s former side and home nation was in June 2022 in a warm-up fixture before the Euros. England won 5-1 with goals from Lucy Bronze, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and two from Beth Mead.
England have only lost twice in their past 14 matches against the Netherlands, once in 2007, and at the Euro 2017 semi-finals when Wiegman was the Dutch team’s manager.
