Teenager Josh Coburn was the hero as Middlesbrough produced another FA Cup upset by knocking out Tottenham with a 1-0 extra-time victory in the fifth round.

Boro dumped Manchester United out on penalties at Old Trafford in the fourth round and followed it up in style to beat Spurs, with 19-year-old Josh Coburn’s 107th-minute strike settling the tie.

The Championship outfit were the better side throughout, booking their quarter-final spot and ensuring Spurs will end another season without a trophy after an abject display on Teesside.

Middlesbrough now join Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals after both Premier League sides recorded victories of their own.

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham: Conte on confidence

Antonio Conte says his team need to take confidence their recent performances into tonight’s FA Cup match and bring a winning mentality to game if they want to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition. He said:

Our performance (at Leeds) was good, but don’t forget against [Man] City it was the same, and before the game against Burnley, we arrived with great confidence and you know very well what happened.

“We have to learn about this type of situation. Yes, we have to be confident because we’re in a good moment of form, but at the same time we have to fight to go through to the next round.

“We have to prepare seriously for this game, because we want to go through. The mentality has to be the same every time. The players have to know that every game has to be a fight, and we have to pay great attention, focus, and not under evaluate the opponent.

“We have to fight a lot in every game to win. For sure, we have to show great desire, great will to win our duels, win second balls and play attractive football but, at the same time, play with great character, great personality, great passion.”

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham

Middlesbrough have only won one of their last 13 meetings with Tottenham across all competitions with four draws and eight defeats. That victory was 2-1 win on the opening day of the 2008-09 Premier League season.

The last time the sides met was in the 2019-20 FA Cup third round where Tottenham progressed after a replay.

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham: Midweek FA Cup games

Each of the FA Cup fifth round games are being played midweek to help ease the fixture congestion caused by the coronavirus pandemic. As in previous rounds there will be no replays, with matches going straight to extra time and penalties if required.

Peterborough vs Manchester City is already underway with Jack Grealish coming close to opening the scoring after charging down a clearance from the goalkeeper and seeing his block bounce narrowly wide of goal.

Crystal Palace vs Stoke kicks off in just under 10 minutes time.

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham: Wilder hoping ‘old cliches’ work out for Boro

Middlesbrough boss, Chris Wilder, is hoping that some of football’s oldest cliches go in favour of his team this evening as they look to try and cause another upset in the FA Cup by beating Tottenham Hotspur. Wilder said:

It’s going to be another great night but only if we turn up. We’re huge underdogs but we should take the belief of making what happened at Old Trafford happen again. The old cliches, ‘they’ve not got to be at their best’, ‘we’ve got to be at our best’, ‘we’ve got to take any opportunity’, ‘the goalkeeper’s going to have to have a good night’...

“Everything that has to go for us hopefully will do. All we can do is control what we’re about and I’m expecting a fabulous effort by the team that is going to be incredibly backed by a huge passionate support that is going to get right behind the players.”

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham: Conte on Boro

Tottenham boss, Antonio Conte, spoke about the difficultly in winning games in England regardless of which tier of the football pyramid the opposition comes from.

At his pre-match press conference, Conte spoke about not underestimating the Championship side this evening and by the looks of the Tottenham starting XI he isn’t.

The Spurs boss said:

You know very well that in England, every game is difficult, especially in this competition when you play away against Middlesbrough, who are having a good season in the Championship,

“Middlesbrough are a good team. When you are able to win against Manchester United - not to forget, Middlesbrough eliminated United from this competition, and they are one of the best teams in this league - it means they have important value. For this reason, it will be very important not to underestimate our opponent and the difficulty of this game.”

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham: Team changes

Chris Wilder makes just one change to the Middlesbrough team that lost to Barnsley in the Championship at the weekend. Matt Crooks comes in to replace James Lea Siliki.

Antonio Conte names an unchanged Tottenham starting XI from the side that defeated Leeds United 4-0 last Saturday. It’s a strong line-up and Conte will be wanting to take his side as far as possible in the competition this season.

Middlesbrough vs Tottenham: Routes to fifth round

Middlesbrough have been involved in two cracking FA Cup ties already this season. They almost squandered a two-goal lead against League Two side Mansfield Town in the third round after Oliver Hawkins and Rhys Oates brought the home side back level with five minutes to play but Boro were saved by a stoppage-time winner from an Elliott Hewitt own goal.

Chris Wilder’s men dug in at Old Trafford in the fourth round. Manchester United fired 30 shots at them but could only score once which wasn’t enough to win the game after Matt Crooks equalised in the second half. The tie went to a penalty shootout were Anthony Elanga missed Man Utd’s eighth penalty to send Middlesbrough into the next round.

Tottenham’s two FA Cup fixtures this season have both ended 3-1. They came from behind against League One’s Morecambe in the third round, scoring three goals in the last 15 minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium after Anthony O’Connor had put the visitors in front in the first half.

Brighton gave Spurs a more balanced game but two goals inside the opening 30 minutes meant Antonio Conte’s men always had control of the match and despite Yves Bissouma threatening a Seagulls comeback just after the hour mark Harry Kane put the game to bed just three minutes later.
