A second-string Manchester United drew 1-1 with Switzerland’s Young Boys in Champions League Group F at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

United were already assured of top spot in the group and a place in the last 16 while Young Boys finish bottom and are eliminated.

Interim United manager Ralf Rangnick made 11 changes from the team which beat Crystal Palace on Sunday and his makeshift side made an ideal start when Mason Greenwood’s super volley in the ninth minute put them ahead.

Young Boys drew level three minutes before the interval when United’s Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek gave away the ball on the edge of his own box and Fabian Rieder curled it into the corner.

United struggled to find any fluency after the break and Young Boys wasted several chance to win the game, most noticeably when Quentin Maceiras was found in space on the penalty spot but poked his shot wide.

Second place in the group will not be decided until Thursday after the match between Atalanta and Villarreal was postponed because of heavy snow in Bergamo, Italy.

Man Utd 1 - 1 Young Boys

54 mins: Shaw presses high into the Young Boys’ half and runs straight into Ngamaleu giving the visitors a free kick deep in their own half. They work it up the right wing to Maceiras who whips a cross into the box but guides it into the hands of Henderson.

The match has become a bit tepid, there’s not much urgency from either side.

Man Utd 1 - 1 Young Boys

51 mins: Young Boys get back in formation quickly as a Manchester United counter-attack starts to develop. The ball comes to Van de Beek who’s fouled by a back-tracking Siebatcheu in the middle of the centre circle.

48 mins: Martins goes on an enterprising run through United’s half and takes the ball up to the front edge of the penalty area. He lays it off to Siebatcheu who turns away from Bailly and smokes a left-footed effort wide of the post!

Second half: Man Utd 1 - 1 Young Boys

Kick off: No changes in personnel for Manchester United as they get the match restarted. Bailly flicks the ball up the pitch and Greenwood manages to bring it under control before sliding a pass over to Lingard who threads Elanga into the right side of the box. Elanga knocks the ball into the six-yard box where Greenwood is arriving but Faivre leaps in front of the ball and palms it away! Almost the perfect start to the second half for Man Utd.

Man Utd 1 - 1 Young Boys

Manchester United have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last five Champions League group stage matches at Old Trafford, their longest run without a home shutout at this stage of the competition.

Half-time: Man Utd 1 - 1 Young Boys

45 mins: There was a lot for Ralf Rangnick to enjoy about that half but a mistake has brought Young Boys back into the game. No added minutes to play so the teams go into half-time on level terms.

Will we see any of the Manchester United youngsters in the second half?

GOAL! Man Utd 1 - 1 Young Boys (Rieder, 42’)⚽️

42 mins: Oh what a finish! It’s a mistake from Donny van de Beek whose heavy touch just outside his own box gives the ball away to Fabian Rieder. He rolls it to the right and drills a rocket into the far top corner. Henderson leaps across but there’s no chance of him getting to the ball. Young Balls are level. What a goal!
