Manchester United got their 2023/24 Premier League campaign off to a winning start despite a poor performance at Old Trafford against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The visitors were the better side for most of the game with Matheus Nunes and Matheus Cunha finding lots of joy with runs through midfield but the midlands side lacked quality in front of goal. Debutant Andre Onana impressed for the hosts and made a number of saves in the second half to keep them ahead.

But, it was Raphael Varane who provided the difference. Jadon Sancho won a corner that was initially cleared. Varane stayed up the pitch and when Bruno Fernandes chipped it back into the box he was on hand to meet Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s pass and head home the winner.

Relive the action as Manchester United host Wolves in the Premier League:

Man Utd 0-0 Wolves

48 mins: Pedro Neto weaves past a couple of United players on his way to the edge of the box. He links up with Pablo Sarabia and is fed the ball back only for Andre Onana to come flying off his line to turn the ball behind for a Wolves corner.

The set piece comes to nothing and the home side clear their lines.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, spoke to Sky Sports before kick off saying: “I am very happy to be here. It is important for us to have a good start. I am excited and confident.

“We have so much quality, we have great players. I am here to do what the team needs.”

He’s had a decent debut so far but hasn’t really been challenged by Wolves yet. His passing has been strong though.

Wolves didn’t look like a team that had just a few days to prepare for this match under a new manager. They were hungry, intense and physically stronger than Man Utd in most areas of the pitch.

The first half certainly belonged to them but Erik ten Hag’s men had a tendancy to play better in the second half of games last year. Will that be the case again tonight?
