Manchester United vs Liverpool LIVE: Pre-season friendly result, final score and reaction
All the action as the two Premier League rivals meet in Bangkok
Manchester United beat Liverpool 4-0 in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday in Bangkok. If the low points for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick last season may have come in harrowing hammerings against Liverpool, Erik ten Hag at least marked a break with the recent past on his bow as Manchester United manager.
Solskjaer lost 5-0 and Rangnick 4-0 and, in the context of that, United could savour a scoreline that brought a 4-0 win, even if a pre-season friendly scarcely carries the same weight. Liverpool finished 34 points ahead of United last season and, in a game when Jurgen Klopp fielded 32 players and Ten Hag’s first-half side a plausible starting 11 for the opening day featured clubs at different stages of planning.
Nevertheless, United’s first look at Ten Hag’s ideas offered some encouragement. Follow all the match reaction to Liverpool vs Manchester United below:
81’ - Man United 4-0 Liverpool
Into the final ten minutes in Bangkok. Elanga curls one from distance but it’s well over the bar.
Alexander-Arnold’s free-kick is into the wall as Liverpool seek a consolation.
GOAL! 77’ - Man United 4-0 Liverpool
United break and that’s another one! Konate runs forward but when the ball is lost there’s a big gap at the back. Pellistri and Amad combine and the former sends Adrian the wrong way with his finish for 4-0.
73’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Elanga rounds Adrian and goes crashing to ground, but he’s a mile offside. The Swedish winger then tries to burst past Alexander-Arnold down the wing but runs it out of play.
Keita tries to free Darwin with a pass from deep but Telles reads it well enough to cut out.
No completely clear chances from Liverpool really, which Ten Hag will be happy about given the changed team and short time working together.
69’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Tom Hill does well and almost sets up Thiago with a deft cross. De Gea replaced by Tom Heaton for United in goal.
Darwin chests down a pass and fires in a volley - beaten out by the new stopper. All Liverpool now after those changes.
64’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Alexander-Arnold almost immediately splits the United defence and sets up a chance, but his final ball is just behind its intended target.
De Gea then has to race out to the edge of his area as Darwin almost latches onto a long pass, denying the Uruguayan a run on goal.
60’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Ten more changes for the Reds, who now look like this:
Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Keita, Thiago, Salah, Darwin, Hill.
A largely senior side now including the new debant striker Darwin Nunez, and teenage winger Tom Hill who has recently returned from a two-year injury absence.
59’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Milner gets awayfrom his man and feeds Tsimikas down the left now. Wan-Bissaka does enough to deflect behind for another corner, with Liverpool pressure building.
Frauendorf then hacks down Elanga as United break.
The crowd are suddenly on their feet and cheering, because Salah is among those ready to come on for Liverpool.
55’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Clarkson feeds a pass for Clark to run behind the defence but De Gea is out fast again to clear.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has been making in-roads down the right with regularity, but can’t deliver a telling ball just yet. Milner’s corner is half headed away, then the second delivery ends in Bajcetic passing straight out of play.
51’ - Man United 3-0 Liverpool
Iqbal is there in midfield too with Savage, with Van de Beek just ahead. United’s attack is Pellistri and Elanga wide, Amad through the centre. Lots of youngsters in their side now.
Jones and Oxlade-Chamberlain almost combine but Bailly does well on the cover.
