Jurgen Klopp addresses retirement reversal rumours

Manchester United produced a stunning comeback to beat Liverpool 4-3 in an epic FA Cup quarter-final as Amad Diallo scored an 120th winner to deny Jurgen Klopp’s side their quadruple bid.

Diallo scored a breakaway goal at the death - and was then sent off for taking his shirt off in celebration - to send United through to Wembley in a dramatic finish at Old Trafford.

Liverpool had been minutes from the semi-finals, in what is Klopp’s final season at Anfield, but Marcus Rashford scored a 112th minute equaliser in extra time, before Diallo’s remarkable winner.

United will play Coventry City in the semi-finals, while the FA Cup draw handed holders Manchester City a Wembley date with Chelsea.

Will Klopp trust the kids again at Old Trafford?

Liverpool’s pursuit of the quadruple has continued despite Klopp’s side going through an injury crisis, with academy graduates playing a key role in their 3-0 victory over Southampton in the previous round, which came just days after the likes of Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns and James McConnell helped beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds are closer to full strength now, but Klopp suddenly has more depth to work with: “We have developed a lot during the season – we don’t change the way we play, the boys know what they have to do when they come on, and when they don’t play they train at least in the same way, so if they do step on to the pitch they know what they have to do. It is not always ‘something else, something else’.

“Everything around changed but we didn’t, we just played the way we wanted to play and that helped a lot. We did that from the first day of the season and that made a real difference. We really found a good way to play with this group of players and it was obviously right for the whole squad and that is why we’ve been pretty stable.”

Can Ten Hag make it two wins out of two at Old Trafford?

One of Erik ten Hag’s first wins as Manchester United manager came against Liverpool at Old Trafford in the early weeks of his reign. United defeated Liverpool 2-1, thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford in August 2022, with Mohamed Salah pulling one back late on.

It hinted the struggles that Liverpool would have that year, in the campaign that followed their quadruple chase, but proved a false dawn for Ten Hag. His first Premier League victory has rarely been eclipsed since, despite United finishing that season above Liverpool.
