From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. After 11 years of misery, in Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s words, came 90 minutes of melancholy. New era, same Manchester United? A first defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford since 2003 made for an inauspicious start after the new co-owner’s investment was confirmed. Turning United around was, Ratcliffe had rationalised, more than just a case of flicking a light switch. Repeat this result – and wretched performance – against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and Manchester City, however, and the danger is that the lights go out on their season.

REPORT: Man United 1-2 Fulham

After 11 years of misery, in Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s words, came 90 minutes of melancholy. New era, same Manchester United? A first defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford since 2003 made for an inauspicious start after the new co-owner’s investment was confirmed. Turning United around was, Ratcliffe had rationalised, more than just a case of flicking a light switch. Repeat this result – and wretched performance – against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup and Manchester City, however, and the danger is that the lights go out on their season.

It is safe to say that Ratcliffe’s three-year plan did not begin quite like this. Nor, indeed, Erik ten Hag’s bid to persuade his new employer that he is the man who can restore United to the summit of the division, let alone the global game. He stared on, grim-faced as Fergie time was instead commandeered by another Alex, Iwobi rewarding Fulham’s excellence with a historic victory. Meanwhile, Ten Hag’s longest winning run of the season came to an abrupt halt, but if those five triumphs were flawed, all containing warning signs, this was dreadful. Rather than accelerating into the future, United rewound time to autumn and its series of losses at Old Trafford.

Man United’s new era starts with familiar failings and another Old Trafford defeat

Man United 1-2 Fulham: Harry Maguire scored late after Calvin Bassey’s opener - but Alex Iwobi struck in stoppage time to earn the visitors all three points

Iwobi's stoppage-time goal seals a dramatic 2-1 win for Fulham to end United's winning run. The Cottagers were bright throughout but couldn't make the most of their advantage in the first half. Muniz was denied by Onana and hit the post, while Dalot also struck the woodwork at the other end. Bassey broke the deadlock, rifling his shot into the roof of the net from a corner, but they were pegged back in the 89th minute. Leno saved Fernandes' curling shot but spilt it straight to Maguire's feet, and he volleyed in from close range. Fernandes and Lindelof both saw late chances to win the game pushed away by the goalkeeper before the hosts were caught out by a counter-attack, which Iwobi finished by slotting it into the bottom corner. Fulham get their first away win since the opening weekend, though they stay 12th in the table. Next up for them is Brighton at home. United miss the chance to go level on points with Spurs, staying in sixth. They're in FA Cup action next against Nottingham Forest. That's all for today, goodbye!

GOOD CHANCE! Fulham are back to committing bodies forward, and Castagne just breezes into the box to offer Traore support. He uses the Belgian, who clips it into Muniz, but he sends his header bouncing wide of the far post.

SAVE! Eriksen loses the ball, but just as quickly wins it up, teeing up Fernandes in the process. He tries his luck from range again, and Leno pushes it out towards Garnacho, but Adarabioyo just gets there in front of the winger.

GOOD SAVE! Lindelof gets forward to join in the attack, and when the space opens up for him, he decides to have a go himself. His low shot is heading towards the far bottom corner, but Leno gets down to tip it away.
